Henry Martin reaches 100 Liga MX goals and 120 with America: another rival who hasn't unseated him
The Yucatan-born forward has 120 goals with the Eagles after his brace in Juarez, right as Miguel Borja arrives to challenge for the starting striker spot.
A brace in Ciudad Juarez, two round numbers, and a scoring streak that seemed dormant waking up at the worst-best possible time. Henry Martin reached 100 goals in Liga MX and 120 with America's jersey, right as the club just added a new challenger to its attack: Miguel Borja.
The Yucatan-born forward was coming off a rough year, the kind where even the simplest goal refuses to go in. But the brace against Juarez didn't just break the scoring drought: it put him in a select club of the team's all-time scorers and, in the process, reminded everyone that he's still been the Eagles' go-to attacking option since 2018.
A competition that never stopped
Here's the thing: fighting for a starting spot is nothing new for Henry. Since arriving at Coapa, he's had to earn the nod match after match, almost always up against big-name foreign strikers. When he made his debut, the minutes were split between Oribe Peralta and Silvio Romero, two proven names with plenty of pedigree. With goals and patience, Martin worked his way into the conversation.
Romero eventually went back to Argentina and Oribe stuck around a few more years, until he left for Chivas. From there, America kept trying out options: Roger Martinez, Jeremy Menez, Nicolas Castillo, Federico Vinas, and Julian Quinones all passed through the Blue and Gold attack at different stages, each with his own style, but none managed to push Henry aside as the regular option.
Then came another wave: Allan Saint-Maximin, Victor Davila, and Jose Zuniga also shared the attack with him. And now Miguel Borja joins the mix, the Colombian arriving with the label of undisputed starter and the promise of a genuine fight for the striker role.
Line up the numbers side by side and the gap is obvious. None of those ten forwards comes close to the 120 goals in 317 matches Martin has racked up with America. The closest in production is Oribe Peralta, with 74 goals in 216 matches, followed by Roger Martinez with 35 goals in 162 games. The rest trail even further behind: Vinas (24 in 122), Quinones (23 in 52), Romero (25 in 72), Davila (12 in 60), Castillo (9 in 27), Zuniga (5 in 37), Menez (5 in 23), and Saint-Maximin (3 in 15).
Mexicans, Argentines, Chileans, Uruguayans, Colombians, French: America has tried just about everything up front over these years. And through all that constant turnover, Henry Martin is still there, piling up matches and goals as new names keep showing up to challenge him for the job. The question that lingers is whether Borja will finally be the one to take his spotlight, or whether he'll just be the latest name added to the list of those who couldn't get past him.
