Guilherme Santos' Penalty Kick Lifts Houston Dynamo Past LA Galaxy as Jonathan Bond Notches Fourth Straight Clean Sheet

A coolly taken penalty kick and a flawless afternoon between the posts were all Houston Dynamo needed to walk away with a match that, on paper, looked like it would produce more goals. The final score was 1-0 over LA Galaxy, and even though it reads like a tight scoreline, the vibe at BBVA Stadium was of a Houston side that was never really under threat.

The goal came early. It was the 21st minute when Guilherme Santos stepped up to the spot after a clear penalty call: Galaxy defender John Nelson took down Lawrence Ennali inside the box, and the referee didn't hesitate to point to the spot. Santos made no mistake, notching his 12th goal of the season, a number that says a lot about how central he's become to the home side's attack.

But if there's one name that sums up Houston's night, it's Jonathan Bond. The goalkeeper didn't have to make a single meaningful save and still earned the praise: he locked down his fourth consecutive clean sheet and stretched his scoreless streak to 372 minutes. Those numbers speak for themselves, especially considering that during his three seasons with the Galaxy themselves, from 2021 to 2023, he had managed just four shutouts in 89 starts. With this result he now has seven clean sheets on the season, matching the total he posted last year, his first in a Dynamo jersey.

Houston didn't just win, the club is now on a run that's starting to turn heads in the Western Conference. The team stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games, going 5-0-2 in that stretch, and sits at an imposing 9-2-2 over its last 13 matches. The victory moved Houston to 11-6-2 on the season.

Things got tougher for the Galaxy in the second half. Defender Emiro Garces came on at the start of the second half in place of Maya Yoshida, and just 13 minutes later, in the 58th minute, he picked up a straight red card, leaving his side down to ten men for the better part of the remaining action. That came on top of losing midfielder Elijah Wynder to injury in the 54th minute, with Isaiah Parente coming on in his place.

There was one curious footnote for Galaxy fans: the introduction of Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, who made his debut in the LA jersey after leaving San Diego FC, the club where he'd put together a standout season with nine goals and ten assists in 27 matches.

Houston didn't get through the night unscathed either: Ibrahim Aliyu picked up two yellow cards in second-half stoppage time and was sent off, though by that point the result was pretty much already settled. On the visitors' side, goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski was called into action just once all night.

With the loss, LA Galaxy dropped to 5-8-7 and are now just 0-3-2 over their last five matches. Houston, meanwhile, improved to 11-7-5 at home against the Galaxy and now leads the all-time series 16-14-14, a series in which the previous three meetings had all finished level at one goal apiece.

There's no rest in the schedule now. The Galaxy will host San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday looking to snap their skid, while Houston travels to face the Vancouver Whitecaps aiming to keep its grip near the top of the Western Conference table.
