Houston Dynamo Beat Vancouver Whitecaps to Stay Atop the West on Negri Strike

Houston Dynamo FC picked up a 1-0 road win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place, in an MLS clash between the top two teams in the West standings. It took just one shot on target for the Texas club to walk away with all three points, in a match Vancouver controlled from start to finish without ever turning that dominance into goals.

How it was decided

Vancouver had the better of the ball throughout the first half, but it was Houston that struck first. In the 33rd minute, Franco Negri curled a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top right corner to make it 0-1. Two minutes later, Negri nearly doubled the lead with a shot from more than 30 yards out that was saved right under the crossbar. Vancouver answered before halftime when Cheikh Sabaly's shot cannoned off the left post, the last real warning of a first 45 minutes that ended with the visitors in front.

In the second half, the home side kept pushing with crosses and runs down the flanks, but ran into Houston's defense time and again. The most contentious moment came in the 63rd minute, when Rayan Elloumi put the ball in the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review, confirmed two minutes later. That proved to be the biggest blow to the home team's hopes. Despite a string of attacking substitutions (Thomas Muller, Bruno Caicedo, Ralph Priso, Nikola Djordjevic and Sam Adekugbe all came on) and several late shots from Oliver Larraz, Mathias Laborda and Tristan Blackmon, the equalizer never came.

Dominance that wasn't enough

Vancouver fired 17 shots to Houston's 9, but managed just one shot on target the entire match, compared to five for the visitors. That gap in accuracy goes a long way toward explaining the result. Based on an in-house xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Vancouver generated 1.649 expected goals to Houston's 0.675, suggesting the home side deserved more than it got, even as the final score reflected Houston's clinical edge.

A result that defied the projections

The outcome clearly contradicted our preview projections, which gave Vancouver a 60% chance of winning, against 18% for Houston and 22% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.16 for the home side and 1.11 for the visitors. None of that held up: Houston won by the narrowest of margins, capitalizing on its efficiency and a solid defense to withstand the home team's siege.

What the result means

With this result, Houston Dynamo FC remains atop the West standings with 38 points, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC sits just one point behind in second place. The razor-thin gap between the two clubs underscores how tight the race for first remains, and Elloumi's disallowed goal will linger as the moment that summed up an afternoon in which the Whitecaps did almost everything right except the one thing that mattered most: scoring.
