Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes Play to Scoreless Draw in MLS

Nearly a hundred minutes of soccer went by and the ball never found the net. Houston Dynamo FC and the San Jose Earthquakes played to a 0-0 draw at Shell Energy Stadium, in an MLS clash that produced shots, corners and an almost endless stretch of stoppage time in the second half, but never delivered the goal both sides flirted with for much of the night.

The game opened with San Jose taking the initiative. Just two minutes in, Ousseni Bouda tested the Houston defense with a left-footed strike from outside the box that was cleared, and eleven minutes later he threatened again with a close-range effort that was saved. Houston answered with crosses and aerial threats: in the 33rd minute, Antônio Carlos headed a corner narrowly wide, and deep into first-half stoppage time it was Felipe Andrade who, also with his head and also off a corner kick, couldn't find the target. With chances going back and forth and neither goalkeeper beaten, the two sides went into the break scoreless.

The second half followed the same script. Guilherme gave an early warning with a shot that sailed well over the bar on a counterattack, and San Jose responded through Reid Roberts and Niko Tsakiris, both testing the keeper from distance. The clearest chance for the visitors came in the 55th minute, when Eduard Löwen forced a big save by clipping the crossbar with a strike from outside the area. Houston had its moments late on too: Jack McGlynn and Antônio Carlos threatened from the top of the box and inside the six-yard line, and deep into an extended stoppage time (nine minutes added by the fourth official), both Artur and Ibrahim Aliyu had chances to make it 1-0 but couldn't finish. The match ended in the 99th minute with the scoreboard unchanged.

The numbers behind the draw

The stats reflect an evenly matched game in terms of shots, but with more control for the visitors, who dominated possession and, by our expected-goals estimate, generated somewhat more danger.

Expected goals calculated after the fact from the match's shots give the San Jose Earthquakes 1.597 xG against 0.773 for Houston Dynamo, a gap that backs up the sense that the visitors were the sharper team, even if neither side managed to turn it into a goal.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Houston Dynamo a 47% chance of winning, the San Jose Earthquakes 28% and a draw 25%, with an expected-goals forecast of 1.85 for the home side and 1.39 for the visitors, a combined total of 3.24 that pointed toward a more open contest. What actually happened was the opposite: a 0-0 finish that neither of the two likelier scenarios had anticipated.

What the result means

In the Western Conference, the draw leaves Houston Dynamo FC in second place with 39 points and the San Jose Earthquakes fourth with 34, just 5 points apart in the standings. It's a split result that doesn't change much for either club, but it also keeps them from pulling away from their pursuers in a tightly bunched upper tier of the conference.
