Independiente flips the script on dominant Unión Santa Fe, wins 1-2

A disallowed goal right at the start of the second half changed the entire complexion of the match. Unión Santa Fe thought it had taken the lead in the 49th minute through a Joaquín Mosqueira header, but the play went to VAR review and at the 53rd minute the goal was ruled out. Five minutes later, this time for real, Marcelo Estigarribia put the home side up 1-0. Then, just as it looked like Unión would hold onto the lead, Independiente turned the result around in a span of only five minutes to escape with a 1-2 win at Estadio 15 de Abril, in Argentina's Primera División.

The first half had been a one-sided affair, with Unión Santa Fe dominating but getting nothing to show for it. Cristian Tarragona tested the keeper with a header in the 3rd minute, Lucas Menossi forced a save from Independiente's goalkeeper in the 24th, and there was even a Joaquín Mosqueira shot that was ruled out for offside after review. Independiente, with Jádson Viera watching from the bench, barely threatened, managing only a long-range effort from Santiago Montiel that flew over the bar. The home side controlled the game but couldn't find the net, and the teams went into the break scoreless after Mosqueira's goal was chalked off in stoppage time.

The second half opened in the same fashion, with Unión pressing down the flanks, and Estigarribia finally broke the deadlock in the 48th minute with a crossed shot from the left, set up by Mosqueira off a corner kick. At that point it looked like the home side's territorial dominance would finally pay off. But Independiente, under coach Jádson Viera, answered immediately: in the 51st minute, Santiago Montiel headed home a close-range cross from Leonardo Godoy to level the score. Five minutes later, in the 56th, Maximiliano Meza finished from outside the box with a low shot that found the corner of the net, set up by Matías Abaldo, completing the visitors' comeback.

A dominant performance that wasn't enough

The numbers leave a bittersweet taste for Unión Santa Fe. The home side had 55.3% possession, fired 20 shots to Independiente's 8, and earned six corner kicks against just one for their opponents. Even so, both teams finished level on shots on target, with four apiece, and that goes a long way toward explaining the outcome: Independiente was far more efficient with the little it had.

The post-match expected goals figures, calculated from shot locations, reinforce that impression: Unión Santa Fe generated 1.685 expected goals against just 0.327 for Independiente. In other words, the home side created considerably more real danger, but the visitors converted their few chances into the two goals that decided the game.

The result also runs counter to the pre-match projections: the model had given Unión Santa Fe a 37% chance of winning, against 34% for Independiente and 29% for a draw, with a fairly even expected goals forecast (1.36 for the home side and 1.30 for the visitors, 2.66 combined). The final outcome turned out to be exactly the opposite of what the model considered most likely.

The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 4 points, and this result widens it a bit further.

For Unión Santa Fe, there's frustration over a match they dominated without reward, made worse by a disallowed goal that could have changed the story. For Independiente, the efficiency shown by Montiel and Meza in just five minutes was enough to walk away with all three points from a stadium where they had been clearly outplayed.
