Independiente del Valle dominated but Flamengo took the 2-0 win in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

The home side had more of the ball and more chances, but the Brazilian club's clinical finishing was enough to take the quarterfinal first leg.

Independiente del Valle dominated but Flamengo took the 2-0 win in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

Independiente del Valle ran into the post, into the goalkeeper and, above all, into Flamengo's efficiency. At Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, the Ecuadorian side controlled the ball, fired off more than four shots for every one the visitors managed, and still went down 0-2 in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals.

The first half finished scoreless but not without warnings. As early as the 19th minute, Carlos González rattled the right post with a shot after a cross from Arón Rodríguez, the clearest chance of a first half in which Independiente del Valle pushed forward again and again without reward. Flamengo, less comfortable on the ball, weathered the storm and went into the break with a clean sheet intact.

The story changed after halftime. In the 60th minute, right after Júnior Sornoza forced another save from the Brazilian goalkeeper, the first blow landed: Bruno Henrique finished with his right foot from the center of the box, assisted by Samuel Lino, to make it 0-1. Independiente del Valle pushed for the equalizer, bringing on Matías Perelló and Ronald Briones, but the game was broken open again on a set piece: in the 74th minute, Léo Pereira headed home from point-blank range after a corner delivered by Emerson Royal, making it 0-2, a scoreline that would hold to the final whistle.

Dominance that didn't translate into goals

The numbers back up what was seen on the field: the home side was clearly on top in terms of controlling the game, but lacked the finishing touch.

According to our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Independiente del Valle generated 1.15 expected goals to Flamengo's 0.85, a gap that captures what happened well: the home side deserved more than it got, and the visitors were surgical with the few chances they had.

The preview projection versus what actually happened

Ahead of the match, we published a forecast that gave Flamengo a 49% chance of winning, against 24% for Independiente del Valle and 27% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.13 for the home side and 1.7 for the visitors. The final result ended up matching that favoritism: Flamengo won just as the model flagged as the most likely outcome, even though it did so with a level of output on the ball well below what Independiente del Valle produced over the course of the match.

Takeaways from the match

Independiente del Valle reached this round after eliminating Deportes Tolima, winning 1-0 away and 3-1 at home. Flamengo, meanwhile, got past Cruzeiro with a 1-1 draw in the first leg and a 2-1 win at home. Now, trailing 0-2 from this quarterfinal first leg, Independiente del Valle will need to turn the tie around in the second leg to keep its path toward the title alive. Flamengo, on the other hand, travels back to Brazil with a clear advantage secured despite being, for much of the 90 minutes, the side with less control of the ball.
