Independiente del Valle hosts Flamengo in Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

The matchup already has a date, a home venue and a bit of repeated history to go along with it. Independiente del Valle will face off against Flamengo in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores, and according to the Ecuadorian club itself after the official schedule was released, the first leg will be played on September 10 at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito.

The choice of stadium is no coincidence for anyone who follows the 'Matagigantes.' Nearly a decade ago, during that dream run of 2016 that saw Independiente del Valle reach a Libertadores final, the club also made the Atahualpa its fortress. It came during a brutal stretch for the country: just weeks after the earthquake that shook Ecuador, the club decided to donate all the ticket revenue from those matches to help those affected. Returning to that stadium for a clash of this magnitude carries weight that goes well beyond soccer.

But this isn't the first time these two sides have squared off there. On February 19, 2020, Independiente del Valle and Flamengo played to a 2-2 draw at the Atahualpa in the first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana final. That match ended level, but the tie ultimately swung in Brazil's favor: in the second leg, played at the Maracaná, the Rio de Janeiro side won and lifted the title. Now both teams meet again, this time with a spot in the Libertadores semifinals on the line.

How the series will be decided

The format for this stage leaves little doubt about the schedule. Since Independiente del Valle advanced to the quarterfinals with fewer points than Flamengo in the previous stage, it gets to open the series at home. That much is already settled: it will be September 10 in Quito. Seven days later, on September 17, the series will wrap up in Rio de Janeiro, where the Ecuadorian side will visit Flamengo at the Maracaná, the same venue that left a thorn in its side after that lost Recopa final.

For Independiente del Valle, hosting the first leg is no small detail when you consider the club's recent history in this competition: the Atahualpa has witnessed some of its biggest nights. For Flamengo, though, the challenge looks different: arriving as one of the tournament favorites, the Brazilian side will look to build a lead before settling things in front of its own fans. The series carries an extra layer of intrigue given what that 2020 draw meant, a result that sits somewhere between a shot at revenge and a bittersweet memory for Ecuadorian fans.
