Independiente del Valle returns to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals after a ten-year wait

Independiente del Valle had to wait ten years to feel like a heavyweight in the Copa Libertadores again. And even though the elimination came in the quarterfinals, the road traveled by Los Rayados left behind a campaign worth remembering, the kind that gets retold more than once over dinner.

It all started in Group H, where the team from Sangolqui arrived as a seeded side thanks to its CONMEBOL ranking. There it shared a group with Rosario Central, Libertad and Universidad Central de Venezuela. The start was not easy: they drew away to Rosario Central while playing a man down, but relief came afterward at home with a win over the Venezuelan side.

From there, things fell into place. They won on the road against Libertad and only let one match slip away, in Venezuela against Universidad Central. Under the direction of Joaquin Papa, Independiente del Valle closed out the group stage with two home wins, against the Paraguayans and against the Argentines, and finished atop their group. Not a bad way to get started.

Tolima, the earthquake and a ticket that tasted like glory

With the World Cup in between, the Libertadores paused and returned for the round of 16. Waiting there was Deportes Tolima. The tie had to be pushed back a week because of the tragic earthquake in Colombia, something that put soccer on hold for reasons that go far beyond the pitch.

Once it was played, Independiente del Valle left no doubt: they took a 0-1 win from Ibague that put them a step and a half into the quarterfinals. In the second leg, at Estadio Banco Guayaquil, the Liga Ecuabet champion confirmed its standing with a commanding 3-1 victory over Tolima. There, after a decade, they crossed the round-of-16 barrier once again.

The reward, though, was the kind that keeps you up at night: Flamengo, no less than the top title contender.

The battle with Mengao and a bittersweet night at the Maracana

The first leg was played at Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa, and there Independiente del Valle was a protagonist from start to finish. The problem was that Flamengo was lethal in both boxes and ended up dealing a hard blow to Los Rayados: 0-2.

With that result against them, expectations for the second leg at the Maracana were minimal. But the black and blue side did not throw in the towel. They came out with a different face, briefly took the lead with a goal from Djorkaeff Reasco and for stretches even gave the reigning Libertadores champion trouble. The dream lasted as long as it lasted: a mistake ultimately snuffed it out and the match ended 1-1.

The elimination hurts, but the overall balance leaves behind more than good feelings. This campaign stands as the second best in Independiente del Valle's history in the Copa Libertadores, and along the way the club picked up important points in the race for a spot in the 2029 Club World Cup. Ten years of waiting that, in the end, were worth it.
