Independiente Collapses After Red Card as Instituto Runs Riot 4-1 at Libertadores de América
A red card for Meza just before halftime opened the door for Instituto, who turned a 1-1 draw into a 4-1 rout on the road by pouncing on the counterattack.

What looked like an even match slipped away in just half an hour. Independiente were routed 1-4 by Instituto at the Estadio Libertadores de América in Argentina's Primera División, and the turning point was a red card that changed everything right before the break.
The home side had only just clawed its way back level. Instituto struck first in the 15th minute, when Jeremías Lázaro finished with his right foot from the center of the box after a Matías Tissera assist on the counter, a goal confirmed after a VAR review. Independiente answered quickly: in the 21st minute, Maximiliano Meza leveled it with an angled shot from the right, also confirmed by VAR a minute later. The 1-1 scoreline held for only a few minutes, and the flow of the game shifted even sooner: before halftime, Meza himself was shown a second yellow for dangerous play in the 43rd minute, leaving Independiente with ten men for the entire second half.
The collapse after the break
Down a man, Independiente held on for a 1-1 scoreline until halftime, but the second half told a completely different story. Just minutes after the restart, in the 50th minute, Hernán de la Fuente, who had come on for an injured Giuliano Cerato, made it 1-2 with a shot into the top corner from close range. Instituto kept pushing: in the 64th minute, Matías Gallardo extended the lead with a left-footed strike from outside the box that found the top corner, and in the 79th minute Alex Luna sealed the rout with a low finish off another counterattack, once again set up by Lázaro. Between the extra man and their sharpness on the break, Instituto kept finding ways through an Independiente side that never managed to regroup after the sending-off.
| Stat | Independiente | Instituto |

The xG numbers generated in the match (our own estimate based on shots) back up what was seen on the field: 0.40 for Independiente against 2.13 for Instituto. A gap that makes clear who created the real danger, regardless of the brief 1-1 in the first half.
The contrast with our pre-match projections is striking. We had projected a 48% chance of an Independiente win, a 30% chance of a draw and just 22% for Instituto, with expected goals of 1.45 to 0.92. Meza's red card and the visitors' efficiency on the counter completely rewrote that script.
What it means in the standings
In Group A, Instituto came into this match in first place with 25 points from 11 games (8 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses), while Independiente sat sixth with 17 points from 11 games (5 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses). The gap between the two sides before this match was 8 points, and after this rout, Independiente's path to closing that gap just got a lot harder.
Among the substitutions, Independiente shuffled the lineup by bringing on Nahuel Banegas, Lautaro Millán, Felipe Tempone, Chimy Ávila and Santiago Arias, without managing to change the course of the game. Instituto, for their part, beyond the forced substitution for Cerato, added Facundo Suárez, Lucas Sanseviero, Juan Ignacio Méndez and Jonás Acevedo to manage the lead. In the end, Meza's early red card and the visitors' finishing on the counterattack produced a rout that nobody saw coming based on what was expected before kickoff.
