Independiente beats out Boca and Rosario Central to sign Chimy Ávila

Some signings come together quietly. Others turn into a full-blown transfer saga. Ezequiel "Chimy" Ávila's move was the latter, with Boca and Rosario Central both chasing his signature. In the end, Independiente came out on top.

The 32-year-old forward underwent his medical exam to become the newest addition for Independiente, coached by Jadson Viera. He arrives as a free agent, having been without a club since he wrapped up his time in Spain back in June, and that detail matters: it means Independiente didn't have to pay a single dollar in transfer fees for a player who, just weeks ago, was also drawing interest from Boca and Rosario Central.

For fans in Rosario, the news carries extra weight. Ávila is from Rosario, came up through Tiro Federal's youth ranks, and later spent time in San Lorenzo's youth system before heading to Europe. Rosario Central had actually explored bringing him back, but the Chimy chose a different path for his return to Argentine soccer.

Nine years in Spain

The forward closed the book in June on a nine-year run in Spanish soccer. During that stretch he played for Huesca, Osasuna, and most recently Real Betis, where he finished with 8 goals in 61 appearances.

Wearing the green and white, he also experienced two continental cup finals: the 2023 Copa del Rey and the 2025 Conference League. Two major nights for any player, though his side came up short on the trophy both times.

His name even came up for something bigger than a club. In 2023 he was included in a preliminary squad list for the Spanish national team, a nod to how well he'd been playing on the continent. Luis de la Fuente, however, never actually called him up, and that door stayed shut.
