India looks to snap losing skid against Darwin Nunez's Uruguay in Kolkata

The home side, winless in its last five matches, takes on an inconsistent but sharper-shooting Uruguay in a friendly with no recent head-to-head history between the two sides.

India looks to snap losing skid against Darwin Nunez's Uruguay in Kolkata

The Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium welcomes a star-studded visitor: Uruguay arrives in Kolkata to take on India in an international friendly that serves, above all, as a testing ground for both national teams. There are no points on the line and no knockout stakes, but the matchup, with Darwin Nunez and company facing off against the host nation, promises plenty of buzz.

India comes in with its confidence rattled after its recent outings. In its friendlies this season, the team has managed one draw and one loss in two matches, scoring just one goal while conceding five. The trend doesn't improve when looking at the bigger picture: over its last five matches, India picked up two draws and three losses, without a single win. Coach Khalid Ahmed Jamil also has a worrying number to contend with, drawn from a different sample: in the two 2026 season friendlies used as a trend reference, India conceded an average of 2.5 goals per match and failed to keep a clean sheet in either of them.

Uruguay, on the other hand, arrives in better recent form, though not without its own inconsistency. In this year's friendlies, La Celeste has posted one win and one loss, with a stronger offensive tally: five goals scored against four conceded. Over its last five matches, Uruguay collected one win, two draws and two losses, an even run that hasn't quite taken off. In that same 2026 season trend sample, Uruguay scored an average of 2.5 goals per match but also conceded 2 per game, with Darwin Nunez as its top scorer with two goals, followed by Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Maxi Araujo with one each. Interestingly, both teams share the same scoring window according to that sample: the stretch between the 31st and 45th minutes.

Probable lineups

For India, the projected starting eleven (with low reliability, based on inference from recent matches) would have Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in goal, a back four of Anwar Ali, Abhishek Singh, Akash Mishra and Bijoy Varghese, a midfield of Lalengmawia Ralte, Ashique Kuruniyan, Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad and Ryan Williams, and Manvir Singh as the focal point up front: the forward has started in all five of the recent matches used as the basis for this calculation.

Uruguay, meanwhile, would likely field Fernando Muslera in goal, a back line of Mathias Olivera, Guillermo Varela, Ronald Araujo and Juan Manuel Sanabria, a midfield of Maxi Araujo, Rodrigo Bentancur, Manuel Ugarte and Federico Valverde, and a strike partnership of Darwin Nunez and Federico Vinas. Maxi Araujo and Olivera look like the most reliable starters, having started in all six recent matches used as reference.

With no recent head-to-head history available between the two national teams for this preview, the matchup shapes up as a chance for India to try to halt its winless run and for Uruguay to confirm whether the offensive uptick seen in this year's friendlies can carry forward. The Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium will host a clash of contrasting styles and very different needs.
