Instituto punishes Alvarez red card, routs Talleres 3-1 at the Monumental

The match broke open the moment the second half started, and in the most chaotic way possible: first VAR overturned a red card against Agustin Alvarez, and a minute later Alvarez himself picked up another red, this time for fighting. With Talleres de Cordoba down a man, Instituto hammered in three goals in barely half an hour to secure a resounding 3-1 win at the Monumental Presidente Peron, in Argentina's Primera Division.

The first half had been even and scoreless, with Instituto probing down the flanks through Alex Luna and Talleres answering on the counter, but neither side found the net. The match changed completely right around halftime and the start of the second period: the double decision on Alvarez left Talleres with ten men just as the second half began, and two minutes later came the first blow.

In the 49th minute, Giuliano Cerato finished with his right foot from inside the box, just off the post, after a headed assist from Gustavo Abregu, making it 1-0. Instituto didn't let up, and in the 57th came the second goal: Fernando Alarcon headed home a free kick taken by Alex Luna from the center of the box, for 2-0. Talleres, despite being a man down, found a quick response: in the 65th, Alexandro Maidana, just off the bench, headed into the top corner off a cross from Matias Catalan to make it 2-1, putting a bit of tension back into the game.

But Instituto stretched the lead again in the 79th, when an own goal from Ezequiel Unsain made it a final 3-1. The home side had one more chance late on, with a shot from Jhon Cordoba that was well saved, but the scoreline held from there.

A dominance the numbers back up

Talleres controlled more of the ball, as shown by the possession and passing numbers, but it was Instituto that created more real danger in front of goal, especially once they had the extra man on the field.

Instituto's 17 shots to Talleres' 6 tell the story of the second half well: once they had the numerical advantage, the home side camped in the opponent's half and never let up. That gap also shows up in the xG generated during the match, an in-house estimate based on shot location: 1.71 for Instituto against 0.88 for Talleres, a margin that backs up what was seen on the field, even though Talleres had more possession and more passes.

The buildup had been far more even than how the match actually played out.
