Inter Miami blows 2-1 lead, settles for 2-2 draw with Atlanta United after late penalty double
Inter Miami controlled the match with goals from Casemiro and Suarez, but Atlanta United fought back in the second half with two straight penalties.

Inter Miami CF went up 2-1 before halftime on a Luis Suarez goal right at the stroke of the break, and everything pointed to a calm night at Nu Stadium. But Atlanta United refused to fold, won a penalty late on and walked away with a point: 2-2 in an MLS match decided between the penalty spot and the nerves of the final quarter hour.
Miami started on the front foot. In the 31st minute, Casemiro rose for a header in the box off a Lionel Messi corner delivery, burying it into the top corner to make it 1-0. The lead lasted just three minutes, as Miguel Almiron finished from close range to level things for Atlanta in the 34th. The match kept swinging back and forth, and right before the break came the first half's third twist: in stoppage time, Luis Suarez, set up by Telasco Segovia, made it 2-1, the score at which the teams headed to the locker room.
The second-half turnaround
The second half told a different story. Atlanta pushed forward, created chances through Aleksey Miranchuk and Mauricio Amaro, and in the 69th minute earned a penalty after a Casemiro foul on Almiron, confirmed by VAR a minute later. Almiron, however, missed the shot in the 72nd minute, and Miami breathed easier. That wasn't the end of it: in the 84th minute there was a second penalty, this time for a foul by Fricio Caicedo on Breel Embolo, and this time Embolo made no mistake in the 86th minute to make it a final 2-2.
The shot count tells the story of how the second half swung: Atlanta finished with more shots and more clear-cut chances than it had in the opening stretch, and that persistence eventually paid off from the penalty spot.
The numbers behind the match
| Stat | Inter Miami CF | Atlanta United |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 50 | 50 |
| Shots | 11 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 5 |
| Corners | 6 | 6 |
| Passes | 505 | 510 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 17 |
Possession was split evenly at 50 percent, but Atlanta was the team that shot more and found the target more often. That gap also shows up in the xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots: 3.352 for Atlanta United versus 1.276 for Inter Miami, a number that paints a picture of a second half dominated by the visitors' chances, even if it ended level on the scoreboard.
The result runs counter to what was projected before kickoff: our model gave Inter Miami a 72 percent chance of winning, a 16 percent chance of a draw, and just 12 percent for Atlanta, with expected goals of 2.94 for the home side against 1.21 for the visitors. None of that held up: the draw ended up being the outcome, and Atlanta, the heavy underdog on paper, was the team that pushed the game all the way to the final whistle.
What the draw means in the standings
In the Eastern Conference, Inter Miami stays at 43 points from 23 matches played (12 wins, 7 draws, 4 losses), 21 points clear of Atlanta United in the standings. Atlanta, for its part, has 22 points from 23 matches (6 wins, 4 draws, 13 losses). For Miami it's a point that slipped away after going up 2-1; for Atlanta, one earned through sheer grit and penalties in the closing stretch.
