A 7-1 scoreline doesn't come around every weekend, especially after five games without a win. It's with that lopsided result in hand that Inter Miami heads into its next match, hosting Atlanta United at Nu Stadium this Saturday, September 5, for matchday 23 of the 2026 MLS season.
Kickoff times across much of Latin America are set for 8:30 p.m. (Argentina/Uruguay), 7:30 p.m. (Chile) and 6:30 p.m. (Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), with live coverage on Apple TV.
A matchup between two very different realities
The standings tell the story better than any preview could. Inter Miami sits second in the Eastern Conference, some distance behind Nashville, with 42 points, exactly double its upcoming opponent's total. After a rough stretch (five official matches without a win between MLS and the Leagues Cup), Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez's squad snapped out of it in emphatic fashion: a 7-1 rout of Montreal at home. Atlanta, meanwhile, is having a year to forget. With 21 points through 22 matchdays, the club is far from the positions it's aiming for and arrives banged up after its latest defeat, a 2-0 loss to Charlotte FC at home. Is that enough to pull off an upset in Florida? On paper, the gap is huge, but soccer always leaves room for doubt.
Names to watch
For Inter Miami, the focal point remains Lionel Messi, joined by Luis Suarez, Casemiro and Rodrigo De Paul, a foursome that blends pedigree and experience in equal measure. On Atlanta's side, keep an eye on Miguel Almiron, Tomas Jacob, Fafa Picault and Paulo Diaz, the names tasked with trying to slow down the home side.
The most recent meeting between these two clubs doesn't offer much hope for the visitors. On October 11, 2025, in Miami, the Herons routed Atlanta 4-0, with two goals from Messi and one apiece from Jordi Alba and Suarez. A forgettable outing for Atlanta, which will now look to write a different story.
With Inter Miami regaining its footing and Atlanta in urgent need of results, Saturday's game at Nu Stadium should offer a solid gauge of where each of these two teams, so far apart in the standings, truly stands.
