Ireland Blows 2-0 Lead as Austria Snatches Late Draw at the Aviva Stadium

Ireland had the game won for the better part of an hour. The hosts went up 2-0 at the Aviva Stadium only to watch Austria flip the scoreline in the final twenty minutes, leaving a 2-2 that, in Group B3 of the UEFA Nations League, feels like two points dropped for the home side and leaves Austria atop the group.

The script could not have started better for Heimir Hallgrímsson's side. In the 11th minute, Troy Parrott struck a right-footed shot from the center of the box, off a headed pass from Adam Idah, to make it 1-0. Austria threatened at times, with Romano Schmid and Patrick Wimmer testing Caoimhín Kelleher, but couldn't find the breakthrough. Then, right before the break, came the blow that seemed to settle the match: in the 42nd minute, Ryan Manning was brought down inside the box by Nicolas Seiwald, the referee pointed to the spot, and Parrott, again with his right foot, sent the penalty in off the right side of the goal to make it 2-0 at halftime.

The second half told a different story. Austria, with more of the ball, began finding space and piling up shots, and that pressure eventually paid off. In the 70th minute, Alexander Prass, who had just come on, finished with his left foot from the center of the box after a pass from Patrick Wimmer to make it 2-1. The goal went to VAR review and was confirmed a minute later. The equalizer followed soon after: in the 76th minute, Michael Gregoritsch, also off the bench, scored directly from a free kick with a low strike beside the left post to make it 2-2, the final score. Late on, Prass came close again, clipping the crossbar, but the scoreboard didn't move again.

What the numbers say

The stats line up pretty well with what played out on the field: an efficient Ireland in the first half and an Austria side that pushed harder for the game after the break.

By our expected goals estimate, calculated from the match's shots, Austria generated 1.77 against Ireland's 1.44, a gap that fits with the visitors' second-half dominance and with the fact that they still salvaged a draw despite trailing by two goals.

The pre-match outlook had pointed to a fairly even contest: our projection gave Ireland a 37% chance of winning, 33% for a draw and 30% for Austria, with an expected total of 2.14 goals. The final result, a 2-2 with four goals, exceeded that goals projection, though the draw, one of the three possible outcomes, did land close to the roughly one-in-three odds it carried.

What the result means

In the group standings, Austria stays on top with 7 points from 3 games, while Ireland sits on 4 points from the same number of matches, 3 points behind today's opponent. For Hallgrímsson's team, it's a bittersweet result: they had the game sealed with a two-goal cushion and ended up conceding the equalizer late on against a rival that never let up and found its match-winners off the bench in Prass and Gregoritsch, who combined for the partial comeback.
