Northern Ireland and Hungary play out scoreless draw in Nations League

A crossbar and a string of saves kept the ball out of the net at Windsor Park, where the hosts move top of Group B2 while Hungary stays stuck in fourth.

Northern Ireland and Hungary play out scoreless draw in Nations League

The crossbar said no to Northern Ireland, and a string of smart defensive decisions said no to Hungary. In the end, it finished 0-0 at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park, a result that leaves the hosts on top of the group while the Hungarians are left with the feeling that a goal was always close but never quite crossed the line.

The match was part of the UEFA Nations League, in Group B2, and from the opening whistle it was clear this would be a scrappy affair, full of fouls and short on space. Northern Ireland came out with more intent in the early minutes: Ethan Galbraith and Isaac Price both tried their luck from outside the box before the 10th minute, and in the 13th, Trai Hume's effort skimmed just wide of the left post.

The clearest chance of the first half fell to the home side. In the 35th minute, Patrick Kelly struck a right-footed shot from the center of the box, set up by Shea Charles, and the ball crashed off the crossbar. Five minutes earlier he had already given a warning with a shot the Hungarian goalkeeper punched clear over the middle. Hungary, meanwhile, grew into the game: Tamás Szűcs and András Schäfer began testing things from outside the area late in the first half, but neither found the target.

The second half opened with another scare for Hungary. In the 51st minute, Jamie Donley headed goalward from point-blank range after a cross from Galbraith, but the visiting goalkeeper answered with a save into the top corner. Four minutes later, Donley tried again from the right side of the box, once more set up by Shea Charles, but without luck.

From there, the game shifted hands. Hungary took control of possession and began stacking up chances: Schäfer went close twice between the 57th and 58th minutes, and the final stretch of the match brought the most intense sequence of the night. Between the 69th and 89th minutes, Willi Orbán, Donát Bárány, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alex Tóth and Milán Vitális all had a go, with a header from Bárány skimming the crossbar and another shot from Alex Tóth saved low by the Northern Ireland goalkeeper right under the posts. None of them found the net.

What the numbers say

The stats tell the story of a match with two faces: Northern Ireland sharper in front of goal, Hungary in control of the ball.

StatNorthern IrelandHungary
Possession (%)36.163.9
Shots1013
Shots on target31
Corners32
Passes326583
Fouls committed1515

The shots on target figure tells you plenty: with nearly double the possession and more shots overall, Hungary only forced one save out of the opposing goalkeeper, while Northern Ireland, with far less of the ball, was three times more accurate in hitting the target. The site's own xG estimate for the match ends up virtually level, with 0.885 for Northern Ireland and 0.861 for Hungary, a fairly accurate reflection of what unfolded: an evenly matched game in terms of danger created, just spread across different moments.

The match also produced yellow cards for Ethan Galbraith, Isaac Price, Áron Csongvai, Jamie Donley, Willi Orbán and Shea Charles, along with a forced substitution for Hungary after Bendegúz Bolla went down injured and was replaced by Attila Osváth in the 33rd minute.

What the result means for the table

With the point, Northern Ireland moves to 4 points in Group B2, with a record of one win and one draw from two matches played, sitting in first place alongside Ukraine, also on 4 points. Hungary, meanwhile, stays on 1 point, with a draw and a loss from its two matches, in fourth place. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 3 points. Neither team left fully satisfied: the 0-0 suits the side that was already on top far more than the one that needed all three points.
