Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan Play to 1-1 Draw in Even Nations League Clash

Aki Samuelsen put the hosts ahead and Temirlan Erlanov equalized with a header in a match where the Faroe Islands created more danger despite the final draw.

Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan Play to 1-1 Draw in Even Nations League Clash

Tórsvøllur erupted after just thirteen minutes: Aki Samuelsen curled a right-footed shot into the corner off a pass from Andrias Edmundsson, putting the Faroe Islands ahead of Kazakhstan. The celebration didn't last long. In the 25th minute, Temirlan Erlanov rose in the box to head home a corner kick delivered by Bauyrzhan Islamkhan, leveling the score at 1-1, a scoreline that held for the rest of the match in Group C3 of the UEFA Nations League.

The first half went back and forth with chances for both sides. Before the home goal, Kazakhstan had already given a warning with a shot from Islambek Kuat that sailed over the bar, and the Faroe Islands answered through attempts from Petur Knudsen and Hanus Sørensen that missed the target. After Erlanov's equalizer, the Faroese side kept pressing: Jóannes Bjartalíd tested the goalkeeper from outside the box, and Andrias Edmundsson forced a save with a close-range header that the keeper turned away low to his left.

The second half changed pace but not the result. Yan Vorogovskiy struck the left post in the 59th minute, in Kazakhstan's most dangerous chance after the break. The Faroe Islands answered with substitutions: Adrian Justinussen came on for Petur Knudsen and tried his luck moments after entering, while Mattias Hellisdal, in the closing minutes, fired a shot just wide. Kazakhstan, meanwhile, had the last chance in stoppage time when Dinmukhamed Karaman's low shot was saved. Neither side found a second goal, and the match ended level.

The numbers behind the match

Kazakhstan controlled more of the ball, but the Faroe Islands were the sharper team near the opposing goal. The official match stats bear that out:

StatisticFaroe IslandsKazakhstan
Possession (%)42.357.7
Shots1410
Shots on target52
Big chances31
Corners75
Passes387538
Fouls committed1010

That gap shows up in the estimated xG as well: our calculation, based on the location of each shot, gives the Faroe Islands 1.831 expected goals against Kazakhstan's 0.733. It's a snapshot of what was generated in the match, not a prediction, but it confirms the home side deserved more than a draw based on the chances it created.

What the result means for the group

With this draw, both the Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan sit on one point in Group C3, in a tournament that's just getting started: both have played one match, with no wins or losses so far, matching Moldova and Slovakia, who share that same line in the table. The points gap between host and visitor is zero, so the split of the spoils didn't shift the order between the two sides.

The match left a clear picture: two teams that didn't hurt each other on the scoreboard but also never let up, with Yan Vorogovskiy coming close to a second goal for the visitors and the Faroe Islands pushing until the final whistle in search of a win that ultimately never came. A yellow card for Galymzhan Kenzhebek in the first half and another for Islambek Kuat in stoppage time were the only disciplinary notes on a night that ended level at Tórsvøllur.
