Javier Aguirre Signs with Valencia as New Head Coach Through Season's End

Valencia has a new head coach, and it's a big name: Javier Aguirre takes the reins at Mestalla on a contract through the end of the season, with an option to extend for another year if things go well. At 67 years old, the Mexican returns to LaLiga tasked with digging the club out of the hole it fell into at the start of the campaign.

Aguirre arrives to replace Carlos Corberan, who was let go last week after Valencia failed to win any of its first five league matches. Since then the team has shown only partial signs of life: it picked up a win over Alaves before falling to Real Sociedad, a result that at least lifted it off the bottom of the table. With four points from seven matches played, there's plenty of room for improvement, and that's exactly where Aguirre comes in.

The coach arrives fresh off his stint in charge of the Mexican national team, a job he held for the past two years. His tenure ended with a round-of-16 exit against England at this summer's World Cup, the tournament Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada. After that World Cup exit, the Mexico job passed to Rafa Marquez, a move that had already been planned as part of a succession process.

A Familiar Face in Spain

Beyond his experience with national teams (he also coached Japan and Egypt), Aguirre boasts an extensive resume in Spanish soccer. Valencia is now his seventh club in the country, following stints at Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and, most recently, Mallorca.

That track record makes him a coach who knows the demands of the league well, and especially the pressure of walking into a locker room in the middle of a results crisis. Now the challenge is different: there's little time to work with, and the urgency to collect points is pressing already. The schedule shows no mercy, and Valencia needs to quickly find an identity that pulls it away from the relegation zone before the season gets even more complicated.
