João Pedro signs new Chelsea deal through 2033, turns down Barcelona
The Brazilian forward has agreed to an improved new contract that keeps him at Stamford Bridge after a season with 20 goals and six assists.

Twenty goals, six assists and a name that had started to carry serious weight in Barcelona. With that kind of season behind him, João Pedro had plenty of leverage to negotiate his future. And he used it, though not in the way many expected: he's staying at Stamford Bridge.
According to sources consulted by ESPN, the Brazilian forward reached a full agreement to extend his contract with Chelsea through 2033. That's notable given that, just weeks earlier, his name had been floated heavily in Barcelona, a club that had seriously considered signing him.
The renewal process is already in its final stage: the player's representatives received the definitive paperwork on Tuesday, so all that's left is the signature to make the deal official. A formality, in theory, but one that completely reshapes the forward's outlook for the next decade.
The interesting part is in the fine print. Pedro isn't starting this new contract from scratch: when he joined Chelsea in the middle of last year, there was already an automatic renewal clause in place. However, sources indicate the new agreement significantly improves those financial terms, which makes sense given the level he showed in his first full season with the club.
Barcelona, unable to compete financially
So what happened with Barcelona's interest? Barcelona did evaluate the possibility of adding João Pedro to its attack, but the talks never really progressed. The reason is the same one that has come up time and again in recent years: the club didn't have the financial resources needed to compete with the offer Chelsea was willing to put on the table. So the interest amounted to little more than that, a flirtation that never turned into a formal negotiation.
For Chelsea, on the other hand, the move makes complete sense. João Pedro quickly became a key piece of the attack during the 2025/26 season, with 20 goals and six assists in 50 matches played. Numbers that explain why the London club moved quickly to lock him down with such a long-term deal.
With the signature still pending but essentially settled, the Brazilian is now preparing to take on his second full season in blue, free of transfer market noise and with his future secured, at least on paper, through 2033.
