Josué Caicedo makes his Barcelona B debut with a buy option looming

The 18 year old Ecuadorian left back sees Alejandro Balde as his model for a possible path to the first team.

Josué Caicedo makes his Barcelona B debut with a buy option looming

Some debuts leave more of a mark in the locker room than on the scoreboard. Josué Caicedo's was one of those: no ball involved, just a suitcase barely unpacked and the facilities at the Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper still to be learned. The Ecuadorian left back completed his first training session with Barcelona B, and that's where the story he wants to write in Europe truly begins.

Caicedo arrived on loan from Liga de Quito, a move that is neither coincidence nor improvisation: the Barcelona club built a buy option into the contract for the end of the season. In plain terms for fans: if the kid performs, he stays; if he doesn't convince them, he goes back to Ecuador. Simple, and demanding, all at once.

The defender is 18 years old and has already met the man who will coach him in this stage, Juliano Belletti, along with his new teammates. Nothing unusual there, except that Belletti isn't just any name for a left back: the Brazilian once patrolled that same flank in Barça colors, and he knows, better than anyone else in that meeting room, what it takes to make the jump from the reserve team up to Can Barça.

Things got interesting when Caicedo talked about the players he looks up to. He didn't hold back:

Alejandro Balde is one of my role models. One of my goals is to keep growing within the club until I get the chance to train alongside him.Josué Caicedo

The comparison makes sense: both are left backs, both arrived young at the Barcelona academy, and both carry that "prospect" label that can weigh on a player as much as it excites him. The difference, of course, is that Balde has already climbed the steps Caicedo is just starting to take. How long will the Ecuadorian need to close that gap? Nobody knows yet, and probably not even he does.

For now, the plan is more down to earth than dreaming about Camp Nou: train well, adapt quickly to the pace of Spanish soccer, and earn minutes with the reserve side. The buy option works almost like an exam with a due date: every match, every training session at the Ciudad Deportiva, adds to or subtracts from the decision the club will make once the season ends.

Caicedo comes from a different kind of soccer, with different rhythms and different demands, so there's room, and it's normal, for an adjustment period. What he's already made clear, from day one, is where he wants to head: he isn't satisfied with simply debuting for Barcelona B, he wants to establish himself in Europe and, in time, stand alongside those who have already made it to the top. Balde's path serves as his map. Now it's up to him to walk it.
