Julián Álvarez makes peace with the Metropolitano right before facing the Barcelona that wanted him

After months of tension over his comments about a possible move to Barcelona and an RFEF fine against the Catalan club, the forward won back Atlético's fans with goals, just in time for Sunday's showdown.

Julián Álvarez makes peace with the Metropolitano right before facing the Barcelona that wanted him

Some matches start being played long before kickoff. This is one of those cases. Atlético Madrid hosts Barcelona on Sunday, November 8 at the Metropolitano, at 5 p.m. (ARG/URU/CHI) and 3 p.m. (COL/PER/ECU), for Matchday 12 of LaLiga, and the headline name belongs neither to a coach nor to a recent signing. It's Julián Álvarez, who arrives at this matchup carrying months of noise, apologies and a federation sanction that still echoes.

It all began in the middle of the 2026 World Cup. While playing for the Argentina national team, Julián opened up about his future at Atlético and admitted he'd had conversations with the club's leadership. The quote stuck:

I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfill my dreamJulián Álvarez
He didn't mention Barcelona directly, but the context and the rumors did the rest: everyone understood that dream wore blue and red.

Atlético's response came fast. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the club's CEO, was blunt:

Our intention, and my personal dream, is for him to stay with us, to keep playing for Atlético Madrid. To compete with the big clubs, you need big playersMiguel Ángel Gil Marín
And he went even further when asked specifically about Barcelona's interest, making clear that if Julián wanted to leave, they'd look for an alternative, but it would never be Barcelona.

Behind that firmness stood some heavy numbers: a contract through 2030 and a release clause of 500 million euros. According to various reports, Barcelona had floated an offer close to 100 million euros, but the deal never got off the ground. From the other side, Deco tried to cool down the conflict in an interview with RAC1, saying they had sent an offer that went unanswered and that the whole thing had been talked about far more in the press than in reality.

From the complaint to the RFEF fine

On June 30, Atlético took the case to higher authorities, filing a complaint against Barcelona with the RFEF and FIFA over contacts with a player under contract. FIFA stepped back from the case, leaving it entirely in Spanish hands. The ruling didn't come until October 27: a 602-euro fine for Barcelona over a minor infraction, after a May 15 conversation was confirmed between Julián's agent, Fernando Hidalgo, and Deco. The committee found no evidence that Atlético had authorized that negotiation, though it also found no grounds to call it a serious offense. A symbolic figure, sure, but one carrying a clear message: there had been a misstep in the process.

The Metropolitano: from boos to applause

While the offices argued, Julián had to deal with something far more uncomfortable: distrust from his own fans. There were boos, there was tension in the stands at several matches. Simeone chose to frame it as a chance to grow:

For me, life is full of opportunities, and this is possibly one that's presenting itself to Julián, a chance to sort out a lot of things in his lifeDiego Simeone

The turning point came on October 24, after he scored the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruña. Julián spoke directly to the fans:

I want to apologize to our fans for what I said during the World Cup. The truth is it was a mistake on my part, both in how I said it and the timing. I understand the fans' anger, because as a fan myself, I would have been upset tooJulián Álvarez
That goal was his second in a row, after also scoring against Stuttgart in the Champions League, and the Metropolitano answered by cheering his celebration as if the distance between them had never existed.

Simeone didn't hide the footballing read on the moment, saying they were finding the best version of Julián and that, for what the fans want and for the club's goals, they need him. Now comes Barcelona, the very name at the center of this whole saga, and Julián will get his chance to answer with goals on the same field where it all started to get complicated. There's also something very concrete at stake on the table: Hansi Flick's side sits just 2 points above Atlético at the top of the standings.
