Julián Álvarez Booed by Atlético Madrid Fans, Walks Off Alone

The forward wanted to join Barcelona during the World Cup, and the Rojiblanco faithful have not forgiven him

Stone-faced, barely involved in the play, and walking off the field completely alone. That was how Julián Álvarez summed up his return to the starting lineup for Atlético Madrid, in a match that ended 2-2 against Villarreal and will be remembered more for the atmosphere in the stands than for anything that happened on the scoreboard.

The forward from Córdoba was booed harshly every time he touched the ball at the Metropolitano. That's no small thing coming from a fan base that, barely a year ago, treated him as one of its own. The root of the conflict is well known: during last year's World Cup, Julián made clear his intention to leave the club and join Barcelona, and that admission turned him overnight into a target for criticism.

The player was honest about his reasons:

I try to be an honest person, and I spoke truthfully with the people at the club, with the people I needed to talk to, and I think a transfer is best for everyone. I want to fulfill my dream.Julián Álvarez

The club's response was blunt, both in how it treated him and how it handled the situation. At the end of the match against Villarreal, the front office decided that Álvarez would not join the rest of the squad in saluting the home fans, reportedly to avoid any incidents. Madrid's leading sports dailies, Marca and AS, ran with the same headline to describe the scene: "No Forgiveness." One showed the forward walking alone toward the locker room; the other showed fans jeering him from the stands.

From Catalonia, the take was similar, though with a different central figure. Mundo Deportivo described a "total divorce" between player, club, and fans, while SPORT confirmed the boos he received at the Metropolitano, though both outlets led their front pages with Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Elche.

Cerezo Won't Budge

Despite the noise, Atlético is showing no sign of backing down. Club president Enrique Cerezo was clear this weekend about the forward's contract situation:

The only thing I believe is that, after a fairly complicated summer with constant questions about Julián Álvarez, he is a player for Atlético Madrid, he has always been a player for Atlético Madrid, and we have never had any intention of selling him.Enrique Cerezo

Cerezo also took aim at how Barcelona handled its interest in the striker. "What I believe is that FC Barcelona has not risen to the occasion and has not done what it normally does in these situations," he said.

Does it make sense to hold on to a player who has already made clear, in no uncertain terms, that he wants to leave? Julián arrived at Atlético two seasons ago from Manchester City on a six-year contract that still has four years remaining. No one questions his performance or his commitment up to now, but his relationship with a portion of the fan base appears to be broken, and the transfer window is drawing closer to closing without a solution in sight for either side.
