Julián Álvarez turns down Arsenal and holds out for Barcelona as Atlético refuses to budge

The Metropolitano opened its league season with a 2-0 win over Málaga, but nobody was talking about the result on the way out. Every glance, and much of the discontent in the stands, pointed to a single name: Julián Álvarez. What was supposed to be a quiet afternoon of soccer turned into the stage for a conflict that has been brewing for weeks and now looks like it has no way back.

Everything changed the day the Argentine forward made it clear, behind closed doors, that he wanted to leave the club to join Barcelona. Since then, every training session, every gesture and every silence from Julián has been read through the lens of that conflict. And in the last few hours the story added a new chapter that finished lighting the fuse: the player turned down an offer from Arsenal, the club managed by Mikel Arteta. It's not that the English project failed to convince him, it's that his mind is set on one place only, and that place isn't London.

That's exactly the problem: Julián only wants to go to Barcelona, and Atlético are not willing to make that move easy for him. That's where the standoff sits. He has spent eleven days training at the Ciudad Deportiva in Majadahonda with a sour look on his face, cut off from the festive mood that usually surrounds the start of a new season.

Protests outside the club

The anger from a section of the fan base is no longer confined to social media. This morning banners went up outside the Ciudad Deportiva with messages that left little room for doubt: "Julián out" read several signs, along with one banner showing the number 19 (the forward's shirt number) crossed out inside a prohibition symbol. Word has it the protest was organized by members of Frente Atlético, the club's most hardline supporters group.

Asked about the abuse the player has received, Simeone tried to play down the situation without dodging the question:

I have a great deal of respect for our fans.Diego Simeone

A careful answer, but one that didn't put out the fire either. Because the root of the problem remains unchanged: Julián Álvarez is under contract until 2030 and, as Marca reconstructed events, he already told the club's leadership on May 25 that his wish was to leave for Barcelona. Weeks later, in the middle of the Club World Cup, he publicly insisted that the best outcome for everyone would be to work out "a transfer."

For now, Atlético have no intention of giving ground to Barcelona, something his camp knows full well but which hasn't moved the forward's stance an inch. And so the standoff continues: a club that refuses to let him go to that particular destination, a player who won't consider any other path, and a fan base starting to show its frustration right at the club's front door.
