Julián Álvarez stays at Atlético Madrid after turning down Barcelona and Arsenal

Two goals in a training session and a smile alongside Cuti Romero. That's how Julián Álvarez summed up, without saying a single word, the end of a saga that kept half of the European transfer market on edge. The Argentine forward is staying at Atlético Madrid, at least until the next transfer window, and on Tuesday he returned to work with the squad managed by Diego Simeone after several days away from the group.

The resolution came on the final day of the European transfer window, right as the pressure seemed to be reaching its peak. The Madrid club flatly ruled out negotiating a transfer with Barcelona, and on the other side, Álvarez turned down the options that had opened up for him in the Premier League, with Arsenal (the reigning European champions) as the main suitor. With both of those doors closed, staying put became the only possible outcome.

Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the club's principal shareholder, had made the front office's position clear weeks earlier:

Our intention, and my personal dream, is for him to stay with us, to stay at Atlético.Miguel Ángel Gil Marín

The executive was even more emphatic when discussing a potential alternative destination, should the player himself feel his future at the club no longer made sense from a sporting standpoint: he said Atlético would look for a way out, but stressed that "it will never, ever be Barcelona."

Simeone's stance

As the situation escalated, "Cholo" Simeone was also asked about the Córdoba native, who had missed three straight training sessions due to illness. The coach chose to back the position set out by the club's leadership:

I think the club was very firm and clear about everything it explained and everything that's going to happen. My position remains the same: from a sporting standpoint, I hope to help him in the best way possible so he continues to be the vital player he is for us.Diego Simeone

Simeone was also direct about the timeline for his return, before the team went on to win 2-0 away at Sevilla: "I'm focused on my job. Obviously, Julián won't be available tomorrow. Once he's back training with us, we're going to give him everything we've always given him so he feels, as he has felt, as important as he truly is to this team."

The attention on the forward, a World Cup winner in Qatar 2022 and a finalist with the Argentine national team at the recent 2026 World Cup, is no accident. His name was at the center of much of the speculation as the European transfer window came to a close, and his decision to stay ended up being one of the most talked-about outcomes of deadline day.

Álvarez had already come off the bench ten days earlier in the 2-2 draw with Villarreal, before the situation fully boiled over, and he is now expected to be back in the squad this weekend. Atlético Madrid will visit Athletic Club on Saturday the 5th in Bilbao, hoping to have their forward back at full strength as soon as possible.
