Julián Álvarez Stays at Atlético Madrid as Transfer Window Slams Shut

The transfer window has closed, and the soap opera, for now at least, has an ending: Julián Álvarez is still an Atlético Madrid player. This past Thursday, the Argentine stayed late after training. Nobody asked him to explain why. He simply wanted to arrive in the best possible shape for the date everyone, inside and outside the club, already has circled on the calendar: the Champions League.

Because that's exactly where Julián turns into a different player. In last season's competition, he put up numbers that speak for themselves: 10 goals and five assists in 15 matches, an even better output than what he managed in LaLiga, where he scored eight goals with four assists in 29 appearances. Great players thrive on the big stage, and that's precisely what happens with Julián.

A Summer That Left Scars

This transfer saga was never just idle chatter. According to sources close to the player, Julián told Miguel Ángel Gil Marín he wanted to leave the club. The CEO reportedly said at first that he'd look into arranging an exit. But Atlético's stance ultimately hardened: he could go anywhere, except Barcelona.

From there, things escalated quickly. Mocking posts spread on social media, Barça put together an offer worth close to 100 million euros, and in the middle of the 2026 World Cup, Julián himself publicly admitted he wanted out. Then Real Madrid came in with a 150 million euro proposal, also turned down. PSG and Arsenal knocked late in the window, and this time it was the player himself who said no, preferring to hold out for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, his relationship with the fanbase kept deteriorating. He was booed at the Metropolitano, the club asked him not to approach the stands to greet fans after a match, and banners calling for his departure went up around the training facility. Julián even admitted he felt "bad" about everything that was happening and skipped training for several days.

As the transfer window drew to a close, Joan Laporta once again publicly reiterated Barça's interest. Gil Marín's response left no room for doubt:

Letting the Field Do the Talking

Julián now has two paths ahead of him. One is to repair his bond with the fans through goals; the club says it's prepared to stand behind him, and there's even talk of a possible public apology to start fresh. The other path is thornier: if his form dips or another conflict flares up, the door out could reopen, though that would hurt Atlético too, since a poor season would chip away at the value of one of its most important assets.

For Julián, keeping his level up also matters if he still dreams of Barcelona. The Catalan club's interest hasn't gone away, even though internally Barcelona has already settled the center forward question with Raphinha, who has five goals in LaLiga's first three matchdays, and with the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.

The schedule, at least, offers a bit of breathing room: Atlético's next three fixtures are all on the road. On Saturday they visit Athletic Club, then it's Anoeta to face Real Sociedad, and on Wednesday, September 9, comes the date circled in red: Atlético visits Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League. Further down the line there are other heavyweight clashes, like hosting Real Madrid on September 20 and facing Manchester United on October 13. But none will carry the intrigue of November 8, when the Metropolitano hosts Barcelona, the club that's been at the center of so much of this saga.
