Julio César Uribe stays at Sporting Cristal after fan assault, vows to keep fighting

The club's sporting director, assaulted by a fan amid the team's results crisis, refused to resign and reaffirmed his loyalty to the celeste institution.

The image hurts: a fan crossing a line that should never be crossed, to attack one of his own. A day after that episode, Julio César Uribe sat down in front of the microphones with a cracked voice and one thing very clear in his mind: he isn't going anywhere. The general director of soccer at Sporting Cristal broke into tears while discussing the club's rough patch on the field, but he was firm in ruling out any resignation following the assault he suffered.

Because that was the point of the press conference: putting into words something that's hard to swallow in Peruvian soccer. A celeste idol, assaulted by a fan in the middle of the results crisis the team is going through. Uribe didn't dodge the subject and went straight to explaining why that reaction has no possible justification.

Disagreeing is something that will always be understood, but going to the extreme of assault crosses any line of understanding, for those of us who have to live through these moments.Julio César Uribe

"I'm not going to abandon ship"

That's where the most personal part of all this comes in. Because Uribe isn't just another executive to the celeste fan base: he's one of the most beloved players in the club's history, and that weighs heavily when it comes to deciding whether to stay or go in the middle of the storm. His answer was almost a manifesto of loyalty.

Because of this difficulty, am I going to run away or stop loving the club? That's not going to happen, I'm going to keep fighting to try to keep moving forward. On principle, you should never abandon ship when things are bad. You have to wait until the ship is where it belongs, and maybe that's the moment to say thank you and leave with the gratitude that's owed.Julio César Uribe

How much does that bond weigh in a decision like this? In his case, quite a lot. He spoke of gratitude, of a story that began long before he held any executive position, of an entire life tied to the celeste jersey. "I'm celeste by birth and I have a very grateful heart because Cristal helped me and my family reach our dreams," he explained, making clear that his affection for the club didn't begin with his appointment to the sporting area, but goes back much further.

There was also room for self-criticism, something that isn't always common in these situations. Uribe understood the fans' anger over the results, though he separated that discontent, which he called legitimate, from what happened with the fan who attacked him. He apologized for what's expected of him and hasn't been delivered, but he also stood by his role: he didn't come to Cristal to erase a history built over years, but to keep adding chapters to that same history. His closing message was one of gratitude toward those who have backed him, with an explicit request that incidents like the one that occurred never happen again on Peruvian fields.
