The Uruguayan goalkeeper, who was injured during Junior's 2-0 win over Independiente Medellin, will be out for at least two weeks while the club sets a date for his surgery.

Junior confirms broken nose and concussion for goalkeeper Mauro Silveira

The collision looked bad from the very first second. Mauro Silveira was left lying on the turf at the Romelio Martinez stadium after colliding with Carlos Lucumi in the 83rd minute, and although the match continued through to Junior's final 2-0 win over Independiente Medellin, concern for the Uruguayan goalkeeper lingered long after the final whistle.

A day later, the club moved to clear up the uncertainty with an official statement. It made clear the fall was no minor scare: Silveira suffered craniofacial trauma, a broken nasal bone and a mild concussion. Three diagnoses that, together, explain why he had to be taken off the field immediately.

For now the goalkeeper is resting and under medical observation, standard procedure for any blow to the head. Junior explained that the immediate priority is to reduce the swelling in the affected area, since only then will the medical staff be able to set a firm date for the surgery he needs on the broken nose. In other words, there's no surgery date yet, but there is a plan in place.

How long will he be out?

Based on the initial assessment, the club estimates Silveira could be out for close to two weeks, after which a new medical report is expected to confirm how he's progressing and whether that timeline holds or changes. That's not unusual, given that between the concussion and the broken nose there's more than one issue to monitor before thinking about his return between the posts.

The truth is that seeing a goalkeeper carried off on a stretcher always rattles fans, and in this case the club chose not to leave room for rumors, opting instead to lay out exactly what happened and what comes next. Now it's a matter of waiting out those two weeks to see what the next medical report says about Silveira's recovery.
