Juventus strikes twice before the break to beat Lecce 0-2
McKennie and Douglas Luiz scored within eight minutes of each other before halftime, and Juventus held off a second-half Lecce surge to take all three points at Via del Mare.

Two blows in eight minutes, right before halftime, were enough for Juventus to walk away with all three points from the Stadio Ettore Giardiniero. The final score was 0-2, and although Lecce finished with more shots and more possession in stretches, they never managed to turn that pressure into a goal.
The match was even and scrappy, with fouls spread around and little real danger, until the 28th minute, when Weston McKennie made his mark. After a quick free kick played into space by Douglas Luiz, the American finished with his right foot from the center of the box, low and inside the left post, for the 0-1. Lecce tried to respond with a couple of headers from Willem Geubbels and Amar Fatah that missed the target, but the blow that truly settled the first half came in the 40th minute: Douglas Luiz, assisted by Federico Gatti, struck a right-footed shot from outside the box that also found the net by the left post. It was 0-2 at the break, with the story of the match essentially written.
A second half of pressure without reward
The second half flipped the script. Lecce came out with more purpose, bringing on Joël Monteiro and Jamil Siebert at the start of the half, and began creating chances: a close-range header from Kialonda Gaspar, another header from Joël Monteiro from outside the box, a shot from Konan N'Dri that was stopped right under the crossbar. Nick Woltemade, already on for Juventus, also came close to a third goal with a shot that grazed the crossbar in the 77th minute. But neither the home side's push nor Luciano Spalletti's substitutions could change the scoreline: the match ended the same way it stood at halftime, 0-2.
The stats reflect that contrast between a Lecce side that had more looks on goal and a Juventus side that was more efficient with what little it had:
| Stat | Lecce | Juventus |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 41.7 | 58.3 |
| Shots | 16 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 2 |
| Corners | 5 | 3 |
| Passes | 333 | 476 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 12 |
The shot count (16 to 8) confirms that Lecce got into the final third more often, but the xG generated in the match, our own estimate calculated from shot location, shows a much more even split than the scoreline suggests: 0.89 for Lecce against 0.819 for Juventus. In other words, Juventus converted at a rate that doesn't match the chances it created, while Lecce squandered a good portion of its offensive volume.
The result also contrasts with what we had projected before the match. In our preview we gave Juventus a 56% chance of winning, 28% for a draw, and just 16% for Lecce, with expected goals of 1.56 for Juventus and 0.73 for Lecce, a total of 2.29. The final 0-2 confirms the favoritism that projection indicated, though the actual match, with Lecce generating more shots than expected, played out more evenly than those numbers initially suggested.
What the standings show
In the Serie A table, Juventus enters this match in seventh place with 14 points from 8 games played (4 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses), while Lecce sits in 12th place with 9 points from the same number of appearances (3 wins, no draws and 5 losses). The gap between the two sides before this match was 5 points, and Juventus's win at Via del Mare only widens that gap in the standings, while Lecce still needs points to pull away from the relegation zone.
