Juventus wraps up transfer window with Vicario arrival from Tottenham

Nearly the entire summer transfer window had to run its course before Juventus solved the problem that gave the club the biggest headaches last season: the goalkeeper spot. The search ended this Tuesday with the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario, on loan from Tottenham through June 30, 2027.

The loan comes at no cost, but the Turin club locked in a mandatory buy option worth 8 million euros (about $9.3 million), with up to 2 million euros ($2.3 million) more in add-ons "tied to specific performance targets." In other words, if Vicario delivers, he stays in Turin permanently, with little room for debate.

The 29 year old goalkeeper came up through Udinese's youth ranks and then went through Venezia, Perugia, Cagliari and Empoli before making the jump to the Premier League. Since 2023 he has manned Tottenham's goal in 117 matches, including the club's Europa League triumph in 2025, one of the biggest titles for the English side in the last two decades. He also has five caps with the Italy national team.

So why the urgency to reinforce that position? The answer has a name: Michele Di Gregorio. The goalkeeper strung together a series of costly errors last season, which ultimately convinced the front office that he needed backup or direct competition. Head coach Luciano Spalletti had been promised a new goalkeeper before the start of the campaign, and that promise has now been kept.

A necessary change after a disappointing year

Juventus finished last Serie A season in sixth place, well short of the positions its history demands, with the goalkeeping situation serving as one of the focal points of internal criticism. Vicario's arrival aims to bring stability to an area that had been raising doubts at key moments in matches.

The debut with the new goalkeeper, though it remains unconfirmed who will start, is coming soon: the Turin side visits newly promoted Frosinone on Sunday in the opener of the new season. It will be the first real test of whether the signing has, once and for all, solved the problem that had lingered for months.
