Kane's brace leads England to 3-0 rout of Czechia

With an own goal and two Harry Kane strikes, England routed Czechia at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League, confirming their complete dominance of Group A3.

Kane's brace leads England to 3-0 rout of Czechia

Harry Kane did what he does best at Wembley: two goals, one with each foot, well, one with his right and one with his head, as England cruised to a 3-0 win over Czechia in the UEFA Nations League. The hosts were already up thanks to an own goal before Kane added the brace that put the result beyond doubt well before halftime.

The opener came courtesy of misfortune for the visitors: in the 26th minute, an England cross deflected off Vladimír Coufal and into his own net, with the Czech defender unable to keep it out. Just thirteen minutes later, Morgan Rogers whipped in a cross and Harry Kane finished with his right foot, just inside the left post, making it 2-0 at the break. Czechia, meanwhile, had barely threatened, with a deflected effort from Alex Král representing their best chance.

England didn't let up after the break. In the 52nd minute, Kane rattled the crossbar with a shot that hinted at what was coming. It didn't take long to arrive: in the 56th minute, following a corner, Lewis Hall sent in another cross and Kane, this time heading home from close range, made it a final 3-0. From there, the match was managed comfortably. Thomas Tuchel rotated his lineup, bringing on Jarrad Branthwaite, James Garner, Morgan Gibbs-White, Rio Ngumoha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Czechia's substitutes under Santi Denia, including Roman Macek and Adam Hlozek, could only muster long-range efforts that never troubled Jordan Pickford's goal.

A gap reflected in the numbers

England's dominance showed clearly in the match statistics: 64.4 percent possession, 17 shots to the visitors' 5, and a clear edge in corners as well.

The post-match xG, calculated from the shots taken over the course of the game, also makes the gap in chance creation clear: 2.266 for England against just 0.192 for Czechia, a figure that confirms the scoreline was no fluke.

What stands out is how this compared to our pre-match projections. Our preview gave England an 87 percent chance of victory, just 10 percent for a draw and 3 percent for Czechia, with expected goals of 3.39 for the hosts and 0.66 for the visitors. The final score ended up fairly close to that projection: England won comfortably, though with one goal fewer than the 3.39 expected, partly offset by the own goal.

What it means for the group standings

In Group A3, England entered the match in second place with 9 points from 4 games played (3 wins and 1 loss), while Czechia sat at the bottom of the table with no points after 4 defeats. The gap between the two sides in the standings was already 9 points before kickoff, and today's result only confirmed the distance between the two squads on the field.

For Czechia, the problem wasn't just the scoreline. Throughout the match they barely generated any real danger, and the shot and possession numbers reflect a team that was never in a position to compete on equal terms. England, for their part, add another impressive showing at Wembley with Kane once again at the center of it, leaving the impression that at this stage of the competition there's a clear gulf between the top and bottom of the group.
