Kosovo comes within six minutes of a historic win over Austria, but Lang's 84th-minute header spoils the party

Asllani's goal had Kosovo dreaming of an upset, but a Lang header in the 84th minute rescued a draw for an Austria side that controlled possession without making it count on the scoreboard and keeps top spot in Group B3.

Kosovo comes within six minutes of a historic win over Austria, but Lang's 84th-minute header spoils the party

Kosovo held the win in its hands for fifteen minutes before it slipped away in the 84th. Fisnik Asllani, who had barely been on the field a few minutes, put Kosovo up 1-0 with a low finish next to the left post off an assist from Edon Zhegrova, and the entire Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri was already dreaming of a statement win in the UEFA Nations League. But Austria, which had controlled the ball for the whole match without finding reward, answered with a header from Christoph Lang to make it a final 1-1.

The first half played out exactly as expected from a team that controlled 64.2 percent of possession against Kosovo's 35.8 percent: Austria touched, circulated and threatened several times out wide, but could not break through. Michael Gregoritsch tested the keeper with a header in the 9th minute and again in first-half stoppage time, Stefan Posch also tried a header, and Xaver Schlager fired from outside the box, but none of the shots found the net. Kosovo, sitting deep, managed to create chances through Veldin Hodza and a demanding shot from Mergim Vojvoda, and both sides went into the break scoreless.

The stretch that changed everything

The second half opened with Kosovo looking freer. Edon Zhegrova and Lumbardh Dellova both tried their luck without success, and in the 72nd minute Milot Rashica hit the right post on a counterattack, just three minutes after Asllani had opened the scoring. That post could have sealed the result, but Austria, which had already turned to its bench by bringing on Sasa Kalajdzic, Christoph Lang and Marco Gruell, found its reward soon after: Kalajdzic headed an assist and Lang finished with a header of his own from the center of the box to level things at 1-1 in the 84th minute.

In between there was a yellow card for Dellova in stoppage time and a closing stretch in which Kosovo searched again for a winner through Ermal Krasniqi, without success. Referee Antonio Nobre added four minutes of stoppage time in the second half, and the only moment of note in them was a high header from Kevin Danso.

What the numbers say

The stats confirm how the roles were split: Austria dominated the ball and the passing, but Kosovo was sharper in front of goal.

The post-match expected goals figure, calculated from shot locations, gives Kosovo 1.138 against Austria's 0.589, a reflection of how the home side, despite seeing less of the ball, generated the more dangerous chances. Before the match our projections gave Austria a 47 percent chance of winning, Kosovo 28 percent, and a draw 25 percent, with expected goals of 1.85 for the visitors and 1.40 for the home side. The final result, with both sides sharing the points on the scoreboard, ended up landing closer to the outcome that our preview rated least likely.

Where it leaves the group

In Group B3, Austria remains in first place with 8 points from 4 matches played (2 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses), while Kosovo sits in second with 5 points from the same number of matches (1 win, 2 draws, 1 loss). The gap between the two sides stands at 3 points. The draw leaves Austria's lead at the top intact, but Kosovo walks away feeling it had the match within a single step of turning everything around, with Rashica's post as the most painful image of the night.
