AFA to Hold Nationwide Minute of Silence to Bid Farewell to Messi's Argentina Career
Argentina's national team says goodbye to its greatest player after 21 years with an institutional tribute that will take place at every stadium in the country during Matchday 8 of the Clausura.
A minute of silence, ten minutes into the first half, at every stadium in the country. That's how the AFA plans to bid farewell, even if only symbolically, to the player who brought more joy to Argentine soccer than anyone else over the last two decades. The news that set everything in motion was Lionel Messi's announcement of his retirement from the Argentine national team, after 21 years wearing the shirt that saw him debut as little more than a kid and depart as the greatest of all time.
As soon as Leo's decision became known, messages of affection began pouring in from every direction, from players, clubs and anonymous fans alike. The AFA didn't want to be left out of that collective tribute. It issued a bulletin with a resolution from its board that requires play to stop and silence to be observed in his honor, an unusual move that speaks to the weight Messi carries even away from the field.
How the tribute will unfold at each stadium
The measure goes beyond just the minute of silence. Stadiums equipped with jumbotrons will be required to air an institutional video prepared by the AFA before each match kicks off. And this isn't limited to the top division: it applies to every category and every discipline, both men's and women's, including Futsal and Beach Soccer. For now, the directive covers only the upcoming matchday.
That matchday is Matchday 8 of the Clausura Tournament, which kicks off on Friday, September 4. That day will bring tributes at Estadio Ciudad de Rio Cuarto (with Sarmiento hosting), at the Julio Cesar Villagra and at the Estadio Ciudad de Vicente Lopez.
On Saturday the minute of silence will be repeated in Mar del Plata, in Mendoza (when Boca visits Gimnasia), at the Juan Carmelo Zerillo in La Plata, at the Nuevo Gasometro (San Lorenzo vs. Talleres) and in Liniers, with Velez hosting Estudiantes.
But the most special moment will undoubtedly come on Sunday at the Gigante de Arroyito, when Rosario Central and Newell's meet in their derby, in the very city where Messi was born and took his first steps with a ball. That same Sunday will also see tributes in Santiago del Estero, at the Monumental and at the Cilindro in Avellaneda. The final two will take place on Monday the 7th, at the Estadio Claudio Fabian Tapia and at the 15 de Abril in Santa Fe.
A gesture that, beyond the protocol, reflects something Argentine soccer itself is still coming to terms with: the idea of a country without Messi playing in the light blue and white.
