The Key Player on Every Team as the Women's Champions League Kicks Off

From Patri Guijarro at Barcelona to Linda Caicedo at Real Madrid, we run through the player who carries each club's project into the new UEFA Women's Champions League.

The Key Player on Every Team as the Women's Champions League Kicks Off

The UEFA Women's Champions League returns this Tuesday, and as always, the real question isn't just which team has the deepest roster, but which player can flip a match with a single moment. After a transfer window that shuffled around some of the most decisive players on the planet, every club arrives with its own X-factor: the piece without which the whole project starts to wobble.

The Contenders Looking to Go Back to Back

Barcelona comes in as the reigning champion after reclaiming the title from OL Lyonnes in Oslo this past May, but the club said goodbye to Alexia Putellas and Salma Paralluelo over the summer. That puts even more weight on Patri Guijarro, the midfielder who holds the team together from the base of the three-woman midfield. They call her "the octopus," and it's no accident: she covers ground that seems impossible, and she's the one who lets Barca's attack pour forward without leaving gaps behind.

At Real Madrid, which still hasn't gotten past the quarterfinals since debuting in 2021-22, everything runs through Linda Caicedo. The Colombian is among the best in the world at beating defenders one on one, and with Caroline Weir gone (the club's all-time leading scorer), her importance only grows.

Manchester City returns to the competition as English champion, and while Khadija "Bunny" Shaw (21 goals and four assists last season) is drawing Ballon d'Or Feminin buzz, the real engine of the team is Yui Hasegawa, the midfielder who runs the game from deep.

The Big Names Looking to Rediscover Themselves

Chelsea is coming off a rough 2025-26 under Sonia Bompastor, struggling to score and showing cracks on defense. Despite bringing in players like Katie McCabe, Manaka Matsukubo and Melvine Malard, getting Lauren James back to full health could be the biggest upgrade of all: the Englishwoman has managed barely 500 minutes in the UWCL over the past two seasons because of injuries.

Arsenal couldn't defend its 2024-25 crown and opened this league season with just two goals from 60 shots in the Women's Super League. That's where Olivia Smith comes in, the Canadian who arrived from Liverpool for a club-record £1 million and now needs to top last season's eight goals.

Bayern Munich is still chasing its first European final and is leaning on Klara Buhl, who led both the Frauen-Bundesliga and the Champions League itself in assists, with 22 combined across both competitions.

At OL Lyonnes, eight-time continental champion, the key is Melchie Dumornay, who can cover both midfield and attack with equal ease.

Surprises, Debuts and Names to Watch

PSG is going through a clear rough patch, but Merveille Kanjinga (11 goals and eight assists in league play) remains its weapon out on the right flank. Paris FC, the third French club in the mix, is counting on captain Clara Mateo, a decade into her time at the club, who put up eight goals and four assists last season.

In Italy, Roma arrives as defending champion but with a defense that raises concerns (19 goals allowed against just nine scored in last season's Champions League); that's where Manuela Giugliano steps in to bring order from a deeper role. Inter Milan, meanwhile, is simply thrilled to be in the tournament after coming back against Wolfsburg in the final qualifying round thanks to a goal from Marija Milinkovic in the 121st minute that forced a penalty shootout. Juventus, without Cristiana Girelli or Barbara Bonansea, is banking on Alba Redondo to find the goals that didn't come last season.

Among the debutants and smaller clubs, there are some interesting stories too. BK Hacken, champion of the first UEFA Women's Europa Cup, is leaning on Anna Anvegard after losing offensive firepower over the summer. Denmark's HB Koge is back in the competition led in midfield by captain Mille Gejl. Switzerland's Servette arrives with Poland's Magdalena Sobal in remarkable form: 15 goals in her last 13 matches, including a stretch of seven straight games scoring. Benfica, with a favorable draw, is hopeful behind Brazilian forward Nycole Raysla after a winless season a year ago.

Belgium's OH Leuven pulled off a surprise in its debut, qualifying ahead of PSG, Roma and Paris FC, largely thanks to goalkeeper Lowiese Seynhaeve, who led the Champions League in saves (51) and saves inside the box (41), and who has already stopped two penalties against Fenerbahce in the current qualifying campaign. Rounding out the group is Austria Wien, first-time Austrian champion, with Uka Modesta as the main attacking threat, though it's worth keeping an eye on young Valentina Potzl, who's back after tearing her ACL.
