Lazio Makes Bologna Pay as Frattesi Strikes at the Dall'Ara
The visitors win 0-1 in Serie A despite the home side's dominance, as Bologna squanders its chances.

Bologna controlled the ball, created chances and finished with nothing to show for it. Lazio, with less possession and fewer shots, walked away from the Renato Dall'Ara with all three points thanks to a goal from Davide Frattesi in the 58th minute, in a Serie A match that ended 0-1.
The first half was even and scrappy, with plenty of fouls and few clear-cut moments. Lazio gave an early warning: in the 7th minute, Mattia Zaccagni fired just wide from inside the box, and shortly after, Matteo Cancellieri and Alfonso Pedraza both had chances of their own that went astray. Bologna answered through Roberto Piccoli and Jens Odgaard, who also came close, but neither side could break the deadlock before halftime. In first-half stoppage time, Eivind Helland headed a cross that grazed the crossbar, the home side's clearest chance of the opening 45 minutes.
The second half picked up where the first left off, with Bologna pushing harder, shots from Jens Odgaard and Nicolò Cambiaghi failing to find the target, while Lazio bided its time. That moment arrived in the 58th minute: Boulaye Dia set up Frattesi, who had just come on following an injury-forced substitution for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and the midfielder finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1.
Bologna tried to respond with attacking substitutions, bringing on Artem Dovbyk, Federico Bernardeschi and Jonathan Rowe all at once just a minute after the goal. Bernardeschi and Rowe both forced dangerous saves out of Christos Mandas, and Lewis Ferguson himself tried his luck in stoppage time, but Lazio held on to the lead until the final whistle, even through six added minutes signaled by referee Fabio Maresca late in the match.
The numbers behind the match
The stats back up the sense of Bologna's fruitless dominance: more possession, more shots and more corners, but no reward.
| Stat | Bologna | Lazio |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58.6 | 41.4 |
| Shots | 14 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 3 |
| Big chances | 2 | 1 |
| Corners | 8 | 6 |
| Passes | 445 | 315 |
| Fouls committed | 18 | 19 |
The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots backs up that reading as well: Bologna generated 2.96 expected goals to Lazio's mere 0.74. That's a wide gap, confirming that the home side deserved, at least in terms of chances created, a better outcome, but soccer is decided by goals, not estimates.
Before kickoff, our projection gave Bologna a 44% chance of winning, against 25% for Lazio and 31% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.36 for the home side and 0.97 for the visitors. The result ended up contradicting that forecast: despite being the favorite and despite generating more chances over the 90 minutes, Bologna fell at home to a rival that settled the match with a single well-executed play.
The outcome also leaves a notable mark on the standings: with this result, Bologna is left without points after its opening match, while Lazio picks up its first three points and sits 3 points clear of tonight's opponent. It's only the first matchday, so neither position means much just yet, but the start highlights a clear contrast between the visitors' efficiency and the home side's wasted chances.
