LAFC rallies from two goals down to draw Galaxy 2-2

Paintsil scored twice for the Galaxy, but Bouanga and Walta pulled LAFC level in a Los Angeles derby that the home side dominated in possession and shots.

LAFC rallies from two goals down to draw Galaxy 2-2

The Galaxy raced out to a 2-0 lead at BMO Stadium and looked poised to land a blow in the Los Angeles derby. But LAFC answered with two goals in nine minutes, and the match ended 2-2, a bittersweet result for Xavier Tamarit's side, which controlled large stretches of play but couldn't find a way to take all three points from Greg Vanney's Galaxy.

The first half carried an early warning sign: in the 27th minute, VAR reviewed a play and confirmed no goal, with the score still 0-0. That was just the preamble to what came six minutes later. In the 33rd minute, Joseph Paintsil finished with his right foot from the center of the box, just inside the left post, off an assist from Robert Taylor on a quick counterattack. The Galaxy went into the break ahead and extended their lead right as the second half began: in the 50th minute, Paintsil struck again for his second goal of the match, this time with his left foot from close range, also finding the left side of the net.

LAFC, who had already been pushing forward with more possession and more chances, responded immediately. Two minutes after the Galaxy's second goal, in the 52nd minute, Denis Bouanga pulled one back with a right-footed shot from the center of the box that found the middle of the goal. The equalizer came shortly after, in the 61st minute, when Leo Walta finished with his right foot from close range, again near the left post, to make it 2-2, the final score.

A dominance that wasn't enough

The match stats show an LAFC side that controlled the tempo for all 90 minutes: they finished with 57.4% possession, 21 shots to the Galaxy's 10, and a striking 12 to 1 edge in corner kicks. Still, efficiency was evenly split, with 5 shots on target for the home side against 4 for the visitors, and each team managing one big chance apiece.

That edge in play is also reflected in the expected goals figure calculated after the fact from the match's shots: 2.427 for LAFC against 1.663 for the Galaxy. It's a measure of what was generated on the field, not a prediction, but it confirms that the home side had more than enough chances to win the match outright rather than settle for a draw.

In fact, the projection published ahead of the match gave LAFC a 61% chance of winning, versus 23% for a draw and just 16% for a Galaxy win, with expected goals of 2.01 for the home side and 0.96 for the Galaxy. How the match unfolded was consistent with that expectation of LAFC control, but the final result, a draw, ended up reflecting the least likely of the three scenarios, underscoring just how much the Galaxy's efficiency in key moments outweighed LAFC's offensive volume.

What it means in the standings

In the Western Conference, LAFC came into this match in sixth place with 47 points from 32 games, while the Galaxy sat ninth with 41 points also from 32 matches, a gap of 6 points between the two sides before this round. The draw doesn't drastically change that picture, but it does leave LAFC with the feeling of having left points on the table after rallying from behind with such authority.

For the Galaxy, though, the result reads differently: after falling behind 2-0 thanks to Paintsil's brace, salvaging a point on the road is no small consolation, especially given how much LAFC dominated for large stretches of the match. The game ended with yellow cards for Ryan Porteous and Pablo Ruiz, and injury substitutions that included Jakob Glesnes coming off for the Galaxy, but the lasting image is of a Los Angeles derby that swung end to end, with neither side able to claim it outright.
