LaLiga 2026/27 kicks off with Argentine flavor, but without the marquee names

Only four Argentine World Cup players will suit up in Spain this season, though Atletico Madrid alone has three of them.

Once again, LaLiga is kicking off with a River Plate accent. The 2026/27 season will feature a healthy contingent of Argentine players spread across much of the standings, though with one difference from other eras: there are fewer marquee names these days and more players with a solid but low-key profile. Even so, the Spanish league remains one of the favorite destinations for exporting Argentine talent.

The most striking detail is that only four players who took part in the 2026 World Cup with the Argentine national team will be in LaLiga this season, though the transfer window is still open and that number could change. Atletico Madrid is once again, as is almost always the case, the club with the most Argentine World Cup players on its roster: Julian Alvarez, Giuliano Simeone and Juan Musso all coexist there under Diego Simeone. Julian's future, however, remains a question mark: the forward himself has hinted at a desire to leave the club, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him in a different jersey before the transfer window closes. That list could soon grow to include Cuti Romero, whose move to Atletico is reportedly close to being finalized.

The fourth World Cup veteran set to play in Spain is Giovani Lo Celso, a key piece at Real Betis, the club where center back Valentin Gomez also plays.

Elche and Alaves, the clubs with the most representation

Two teams each have four Argentines on their books. At Elche, the roster includes Facundo Buonanotte (arriving as reinforcement from the Premier League), Abiel Osorio, Federico Redondo and goalkeeper Matias Dituro. At Alaves, meanwhile, the group is made up of Adrian Rodriguez, Lucas Boye, Nahuel Tenaglia and Nicolas Valentini, the latter arriving from Italy's Serie A.

Beyond those two clubs, there are other names with national team pedigree who will also be on display this season: defender Juan Foyth, at Villarreal, and midfielder Guido Rodriguez, who joins to add experience to Valencia's midfield. At Rayo Vallecano, goalkeeper Augusto Batalla remains an important piece, a player who has earned the Madrid club's respect match after match.

Rounding out the list are Zaid Romero at Getafe and Thiago Fernandez at Levante, two younger prospects looking to carve out a place for themselves in Spanish soccer. In total, a number of clubs are counting on Argentine talent to help chase their goals this season, though as usual in the transfer market, there could still be surprises before the window closes for good.
