Lamine Yamal hits 50 goals at 19, joining Barcelona's elite company

Only Neymar reached that mark at a younger age, while Haaland needed fewer games but got there later in life.

A quality finish against Rayo Vallecano, the kind that's already becoming his signature, gave Lamine Yamal a round number to celebrate: 50 goals in a Barcelona shirt. And as if that weren't enough, minutes later he added a 51st. The kid from Mataro is 19 years old and is already starting to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the biggest names in recent soccer history.

The exact tally: Lamine reached 50 goals at 19 years and 49 days old, after playing 154 games for Barcelona's first team. Add to that his 52 assists, and he's already up to 103 direct goal contributions since his debut. For a winger who hasn't even turned 20 yet, those are numbers that invite comparison.

Neymar, the only one to beat him on speed

Is Lamine the youngest player in history to reach this tally? Not quite. That honor still belongs to Neymar, who hit 50 goals with Santos at just 18 years and 272 days old, on November 3, 2010, against Vitoria. What's striking is that he did it in 50 fewer games than Lamine: it took him just 104 matches.

The one who falls behind on speed, though not on age, is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian was the fastest of them all to reach this mark: he needed just 78 games, doing so at 19 years and 181 days old, on January 18, 2020, with a hat trick for Borussia Dortmund against Augsburg. In other words, he'd played more games than Neymar and Lamine, but had far less career time to rack them up.

What about Mbappe, Messi and Cristiano?

Kylian Mbappe reached 50 goals at 19 years and 241 days old, after 106 games, thanks to a brace against Guingamp on August 18, 2018. Behind Lamine in terms of early achievement come two absolute legends of the game: Lionel Messi, who needed 119 games and reached the mark at 21 years and 120 days old (October 22, 2008, against Basel), and Cristiano Ronaldo, the latest bloomer on the list, who hit 50 goals at 22 years and 42 days old after 208 games with Manchester United, scoring against Middlesbrough on March 19, 2007.

Seeing it all in perspective helps put into context what Lamine Yamal is building at Barcelona. He's not the earliest to reach the mark in history, nor the one who needed the fewest games, but he shares the table with Neymar, Haaland, Mbappe, Messi and Cristiano, and that's no small company for someone still playing through his first major stretch as an undisputed starter.
