Lautaro Martínez injured, Inter lose their captain for seven key matches

A left thigh flexor issue will keep the Argentine striker out for at least three weeks, right as Inter face the derby against Milan and two Champions League matchups.

Two goals, a joy cut short, and a blow nobody wanted to see. That's how Lautaro Martínez summed up his night against Club Brugge, a match that ended in a 4-3 defeat for Inter at San Siro and brought news that stung worse than the result itself: the Argentine captain had gotten hurt.

The Italian club wasted no time. On Thursday, Lautaro went to the Humanitas Institute in Rozzano for tests, and the diagnosis that came back was one nobody in Milan wanted to hear: a muscle issue in the flexors of his left thigh. Inter confirmed it themselves with a brief statement, the kind that doesn't leave much room for immediate optimism: "tests have revealed a muscle injury to the flexor muscles of the left thigh."

What does this actually mean in terms of time and matches missed? At least three weeks on the sidelines, according to initial estimates. And that's where the schedule starts to hurt almost as much as the injury itself.

The stretch Inter face without their captain

The upcoming run of fixtures is no small matter for Inter. Before the next international break on November 9, the Nerazzurri have to navigate a string of crucial matches, and everything points to Lautaro being unavailable for all of them.

The list is long: in Serie A he would miss matchups against Bologna, Fiorentina, Venezia, Milan and Como, while in the Champions League he'd sit out clashes with Shakhtar Donetsk and Feyenoord. In total, as many as seven matches are at risk, among them nothing less than the derby against Milan, set for October 31.

The absence carries weight because Lautaro isn't just another forward on this team: he's the offensive focal point and a central piece of the project. So far this Serie A season he already has four goals in five matches, and not just any goals. He scored a brace against Roma that helped turn around a match that started 0-2 down, and he was also the one who showed up in the 91st minute against Napoli to complete another comeback when the team trailed by two goals. Those timely appearances in crunch moments are exactly what will be missed most.

If the timeline holds as estimated, the Argentine striker's return would come only after the November international break. Still, as is always the case with this type of muscle injury, everything will depend on how it progresses in the coming days and how his body responds during recovery. Inter will have to figure out how to cope without their captain right during the stretch of the calendar where there's the least room for error.
