Lazio thrash Sassuolo 6-2 to stay unbeaten atop Serie A

A Noslin brace and goals from all over the lineup helped Lazio crush a Sassuolo side that played a man down from the 30th minute and missed two penalties.

Lazio thrash Sassuolo 6-2 to stay unbeaten atop Serie A

Sixty seconds. That's all it took for Lazio to go ahead at the MAPEI Stadium, with a finish from Kenneth Taylor that kicked off an afternoon of madness. By the end it was 6-2 for Gennaro Gattuso's side, in a match that featured eight goals, two missed penalties, a red card and pretty much everything except a moment of calm.

Sassuolo, coached by Alberto Aquilani, never found a way to slow the onslaught. Kristian Thorstvedt had barely leveled things at 1-1 in the 6th minute when Lazio struck again: Gustav Isaksen made it 1-2 in the 12th, and three minutes later came the third, from Romano Floriani Mussolini, confirmed after a VAR check. In barely a quarter of an hour, the match was already all but decided.

The blow to the home side's morale only got worse in the 30th minute, when Kristian Thorstvedt, the same player who had scored their opening goal, was shown a red card and left his team down to ten for nearly the entire second half. Sebastiano Esposito pulled one back in the 42nd minute with a header assisted by Simone Cinquegrano, but Lazio's response was immediate: Mattia Zaccagni, also with a header, made it 2-4 right before halftime, in the 45th minute.

Missed penalties and a Lazio side that never eased off

The second half opened with another jolt for Sassuolo: a penalty committed by Simone Cinquegrano for a handball inside the box, awarded after a VAR review. But Zaccagni wasted the golden chance in the 49th minute, firing a shot wide of the right post. Shortly after, in the 59th minute, Lazio won another penalty, this time for a foul by Duje Caleta-Car on Isaksen, and once again they failed to convert: Davide Frattesi sent his low shot straight into the goalkeeper's hands.

Not even two missed penalties could stop the bleeding for Sassuolo. Tijjani Noslin, who had come on hungry in the second half, scored a brace: first in the 55th minute with a shot from outside the box, and then in the 64th with a strike into the top corner that made it a final 2-6.

What the numbers say

The stats clearly reflect the gap in performance between the two sides over the 90 minutes.

The xG generated in the match, an in-house estimate calculated from the shots taken, tells the same story: 1.105 for Sassuolo against 3.897 for Lazio, a gap that confirms the visitors' dominance even beyond the scoreline.

What's striking is that none of this resembled what we had projected before kickoff. In our preview we gave Lazio a 40% chance of winning, 30% to a draw and 30% to a Sassuolo victory, with expected goals of just 1.35 for the visitors and 1.14 for the hosts, a combined total of 2.48. Reality tripled that figure and made a mockery of any calculation pointing to a draw or a home win.

What the result means in the standings

With this win, Lazio remain in first place with 25 points from 9 matches played, still unbeaten in this Serie A campaign. Sassuolo, meanwhile, sit on 8 points from the same number of games, down in the lower half of the table, with a goal difference that has now piled up to eight more conceded than scored. The 17-point gap between the two sides in the standings was perfectly mirrored on the field.

For Lazio, an offensive showcase with goals spread across the lineup: Taylor, Isaksen, Floriani Mussolini, Zaccagni and the Noslin brace. For Sassuolo, an afternoon to forget, marked by Thorstvedt's red card and a defense that couldn't contain a rival who never let up.
