Leicester City holds off a defiant Oxford City 4-2 in FA Cup thriller

Six goals, a possession split that finished 74 percent to 26 percent in favor of the visitors, and an Oxford City side that never stopped fighting even as the scoreline slipped away from them: that's the story of the 4-2 win Leicester City picked up at The MGroup Stadium, in an FA Cup clash packed with action at both ends.

The match got going with Leicester grabbing an early lead. In the 15th minute, Louis Page struck from outside the box, curling a left-footed shot into the top corner after an assist from Bobby De Cordova-Reid, making it 0-1. Oxford City wasted no time hitting back: in the 30th minute, amid a scramble following a corner kick, Scott Pollock connected with a left-footed effort from an almost impossible angle that somehow found its way through the middle of the goal to level things up. The 1-1 scoreline held until halftime, in a first half that was even on the board even if not so even in play, with Leicester already controlling possession comfortably.

The second half told a different story. Leicester came out with a different gear and in just nine minutes put any doubt to rest: in the 52nd minute, Emil Riis got ahead of the defense to head home from close range and make it 1-2, finishing off a cross from Harry Howell. Six minutes later, in the 58th minute, Kamari Doyle slotted home with his left foot inside the box, assisted by Page, for 1-3. Oxford City, far from giving up, pulled one back almost immediately: in the 61st minute, Josh Ashby fired in with his right foot from the center of the box, also into the top corner, making it 2-3, off a pass from Zac McEachran. It was the high point of the home side's hopes, with the crowd briefly dreaming of an equalizer the run of play didn't quite support.

Leicester put the game to bed in the 81st minute, when Tom Watson, on from the bench, finished with his left foot inside the box, once again set up by Page, who had a hand in three of his team's four assists on the night. The 4-2 scoreline held firm, even as Oxford City pushed for one last chance through Isaac Westendorf and Leicester answered with a shot from Olabade Aluko that rattled the post deep into stoppage time.

The numbers behind the dominance

The stats back up what played out on the field: Leicester controlled the ball and created chances with authority, while Oxford City had to rely on isolated moments to do damage.

The post-match xG estimate, calculated from shot locations, reflects that same gap: 0.48 for Oxford City against 1.85 for Leicester City, a difference that lines up with the territorial dominance the visitors showed for much of the 90 minutes.

What the preview said

Before kickoff, our projection gave Leicester City a 43% chance of winning, against 28% for Oxford City and 29% for a draw, with a combined expected goals total of 2.60 (1.13 for the home side and 1.46 for the visitors). The final result, with six goals total and a clear Leicester win, blew well past that projected goal tally, though the outcome itself, a visiting win, was the scenario the preview rated as most likely.

With this result, Leicester City leaves the impression of a team that can hurt opponents in multiple ways, with Louis Page standing out as the main source of danger from distance and in the final pass. Oxford City, for its part, can take some pride in having matched its opponent on the scoreboard for stretches of the match, even if the gap in overall control ultimately proved decisive.
