Leipzig thrashes Hamburg 5-0 as Demichelis answers Champions League setback in style
Martin Demichelis's side turned five devastating minutes into the difference maker, sealing a resounding win in Bundesliga matchday three.
Five goals, two of them scored in a span of just five minutes, and a calm that stood in sharp contrast to the uncertainty Como had left behind in the Champions League. Martin Demichelis's Leipzig needed a quick response, and it found one this Sunday with a resounding rout: 5-0 over Hamburg in matchday three of the Bundesliga.
The match opened without much drama, almost as if the home side were taking its time to get going. But in the 17th minute, the first spark appeared: Ezechiel Banzuzi delivered a precise cross and Tidiam Gomis finished without hesitation to make it 1-0. It was the first blow in what would turn out to be a crushing afternoon for Hamburg.
The second goal came from a story that repeats itself far too often for struggling teams: a sloppy error playing out of the back. A visiting defender gave the ball away near his own box, and Antonio Nusa, alert as ever, pounced on it and finished for the 2-0. With that comfortable cushion, Leipzig headed into the break without further alarm.
Five second half minutes that changed everything
If the first half had been about control, the second was about demolition. In just five minutes, between the 72nd and 77th minutes, the match went from a comfortable win to a lopsided rout. First it was Willi Orban, who headed home a free kick taken by Nusa, the ball striking the right post before nestling in for the 3-0, leaving Daniel Heuer Fernandes with no chance.
Less than three minutes later, Christopher Nkunku, once again set up by a tireless Nusa, scored the fourth. And as if that weren't enough, in the 77th minute, Romulo Cardozo popped up to seal the fifth, making it a resounding 5-0 that left no room for a response.
With this win, Leipzig climbed to fifth place in the Bundesliga with six points, putting its rough European night behind it. For Hamburg, meanwhile, the picture keeps getting bleaker: the club suffered its third straight defeat, has yet to score a single goal this season, and has already conceded 12 goals in just three matchdays. Hamburg sits at the bottom of the table, deep in the relegation zone, and needs to find answers before the season slips away.
