Goals from Sotoca and Udol put Lens in front, and despite Udol's red card and Merah's late strike, Lens hung on to beat Lyon.

Lens holds on with ten men to edge Lyon 2-1 in Ligue 1

Lens went up two goals, dropped to ten men, and still held on for a 2-1 win over Lyon at the Stade Felix Bollaert-Delelis, in a Ligue 1 match that got tighter down the stretch than it had any right to.

The script looked simple for almost an hour, with Florian Thauvin driving everything. He first slipped a through ball for Florian Sotoca to open the scoring in the 35th minute with a right-footed strike from the center of the box. Then, right at the start of the closing stretch, in the 75th, he swung in a cross off a bounced free kick that Matthieu Udol met with a header, just inside the left post, to make it 2-0.

From there, everything changed. Just eight minutes after scoring, Udol was sent off in the 83rd minute, and Lyon made the extra man count almost right away: in the 84th, Khalis Merah, who had just come on, pulled one back with a low shot just inside the left post to make it 2-1. Lens had to grind out the result a man down for the remaining minutes, including the five of stoppage time added by the fourth official, but it didn't concede again.

How the match unfolded

Before the goals, the first half went back and forth, with Lens creating the better chances: Sotoca tested the keeper with his head and his right foot on several occasions, Odsonne Edouard also tried a header, and Thauvin fired a shot that sailed over the bar. Lyon answered with attempts from Mads Bidstrup and Lois Openda, but went into the break down 1-0.

In the second half, Lyon pushed forward with Pavel Sulc, Tyler Morton, and substitutes Keito Nakamura and Kail Boudache, all of whom tested the goal without success while Dominik Greif, Sotoca, and company kept probing the opposing box. Lens's second goal, with Thauvin involved again, looked to have sealed the match before Udol's red card gave Lyon new life, life that Merah ultimately turned into a goal.

By the numbers

Lyon had more of the ball, but Lens was sharper near the opposing box, something reflected in the post-match expected goals model built from the match's shots: 1.52 for Lens against 1.12 for Lyon.

The pre-match odds had pointed to a fairly even matchup: 41% for Lens, 27% for a draw, and 32% for Lyon, with expected goals of 1.6 for the home side and 1.4 for the visitors. The final result lined up with that slight edge for Lens, though the path there, a two-goal cushion that nearly evaporated after the red card, delivered more tension than those numbers suggested.

What it means in the standings

In the overall table, Lyon came in second with 11 points from 6 matches played (3 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss), while Lens sat in seventh with 7 points from 6 matches (2 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses). The loss leaves Lyon with the same need to respond that it already had, while the win for Lens, though it doesn't lift the club out of the table's middle ground, snaps a run of poor results in the competition.
