León Routs Real Salt Lake 3-0 in Quarterfinals as Cambindo Nets a Brace and Vegas Adds Another

Diber Cambindo scored twice, Sebastian Vegas headed home from a corner, and León ended up routing Real Salt Lake 3-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The match, part of the Quarterfinals, was decided in just 51 minutes of play: between the 20th and 71st minutes, León went from a one-goal lead to putting the game away entirely.

The opener came in the 20th minute: Ivan Moreno whipped in a cross and Cambindo finished with his left foot, low and inside the post, for the 1-0. There had been warning signs even before that: Daniel Arcila had rattled the left post with a shot in the 13th minute off a Fernando Beltran assist, and Beltran himself was a constant source of danger all night. Real Salt Lake didn't sit back either; Diego Luna and Morgan Guilavogui tested their luck in the opening fifteen minutes, though without seriously troubling the home goalkeeper.

The closing stretch of the first half passed without further changes to the scoreline, though the play went back and forth: Sergi Solans forced two straight saves from León's goalkeeper in the 36th minute, and the first half ended with León ahead 1-0.

The knockout blow in the second half

The match blew open in a span of fifteen minutes. In the 65th minute, off a corner kick, Beltran delivered the cross and Sebastian Vegas headed it low into the net for 2-0. Six minutes later, in the 71st, Cambindo struck again, this time set up by Beltran once more, to make it 3-0 with a left-footed shot down the middle of the goal. With that brace, Cambindo grabbed the headlines, but the name behind all three key assists was Fernando Beltran.

Real Salt Lake tried to respond with substitutions (Aiden Hezarkhani, Alexandros Katranis and Dominik Marczuk all came on after the hour mark) and had a couple of half chances through Pablo Ruiz and Katranis, but couldn't create a clear opportunity to breathe any life back into the scoreline.

What the numbers say

Possession was nearly split down the middle, but León was more effective at creating clear chances and getting shots on target.

The xG calculated after the fact based on the match's shots also backs up León's dominance: 1.746 compared to 0.852 for Real Salt Lake. It's not a figure used as a prediction, but rather a read on what each team generated from the shots they took, and it confirms that the 3-0 scoreline wasn't an exaggerated result relative to how the game actually played out.

It's worth comparing that to what was projected before kickoff: our preview gave Real Salt Lake a 40% chance of winning, 32% for León and 28% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.31 for the home side and 1.48 for the visitors. The field told a different story: León didn't just win, they did it by a three-goal margin that far exceeded any prior expectation.

Referee Steven Madrigal handed out two yellow cards, one to DeAndre Yedlin in the first half and others to Diber Cambindo and Lukas Engel in the second, in a match that had intensity but never got out of hand in terms of fouls. León walks away with a commanding win in the Quarterfinals that, with tonight's result on the board, leaves the Mexican side in a comfortable position for the rest of the tie.
