Leon Suffers but Rallies Late to Beat Juarez 2-1 in Stoppage Time

Leon had to wait until stoppage time to settle a match that got complicated right when it looked like it was under control. At Estadio Leon, Javier Gandolfi's side beat Gustavo Lema's Juarez 2-1, but the final score doesn't come close to capturing how wild the closing stretch was: an own goal, a penalty in the 93rd minute and the winner in the 98th made for a nerve-wracking finish in Liga MX.

The first half went by without much drama and ended 0-0, with Oscar Estupinan testing the keeper with a header and a left-footed shot without success, while Ismael Diaz answered for the home side with an attempt that Sebastian Jurado saved low to his left. There were flashes here and there, but nothing to break the deadlock.

A finish decided in ten minutes

The match finally broke open in the 75th minute, when Francisco Nevarez put the ball into his own net following a VAR review that confirmed the goal a minute later: Leon 1, Juarez 0. With the lead in hand, it looked like all three points would stay at home. But Juarez refused to fold: in the 88th minute they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Jesus Lara inside the box, and although the goal took a while to be confirmed due to the review, Estupinan made no mistake from the spot in the 93rd minute to make it 1-1.

The tie lasted just five minutes. Deep into stoppage time, in the 98th minute, Alfonso Alvarado showed up in the middle of the box to finish with his right foot, low and inside the post, off a cross from Edgar Guerra, sealing a 2-1 win for Leon just as the match was winding down.
