Leonardo Balerdi joins Roma on loan from Marseille

Another Argentine for the Olimpico. Roma announced on Sunday the arrival of Leonardo Balerdi, a defender joining from Olympique de Marseille to strengthen the back line Gian Piero Gasperini is building ahead of his first season in charge of the club.

The deal was closed as a loan with a buy option set at 16 million euros. Balerdi will wear number 26 and has already begun training with his new teammates as he looks to earn a spot in the defense.

The 27-year-old center back is not arriving as a blind bet. Developed in the youth ranks at Boca Juniors, he made the jump to Europe by way of Borussia Dortmund before settling in at Marseille, where he became a regular fixture in top-level soccer. Between both clubs, he has already topped 200 appearances in European competitions, a number that speaks to his consistency and to the trust coaches have placed in him over the years.

His resume also includes time with the Argentina national team: he has 11 caps for the Albiceleste, adding to the credentials of a defender joining a club that wants to compete at the top of Serie A.

A Roma squad that's increasingly Argentine

With Balerdi's arrival, Gasperini now has five Argentine players on his roster. The defender will share a locker room with Paulo Dybala, one of the team's leading figures, as well as Matias Soule, Nahuel Molina and Santiago Castro. Molina and Castro were also brought in during this same transfer window, so the Albiceleste contingent is growing fast within the giallorossi squad.

That's no coincidence. Roma has been betting on players with international experience and solid track records in top leagues, and the Argentine market appears to have become a regular source of reinforcements for the club. It remains to be seen how Gasperini will fit all these names into his system, especially in defense, where Balerdi arrives to compete for a starting spot.

The club itself welcomed the defender on its official social media channels with a short but direct message: "Welcome to Roma, Leonardo," accompanied by the Argentine flag.

With Balerdi now settled in the city, Roma has filled one of the pieces it was looking for on defense this transfer window. Now the challenge is adjusting quickly to Italian soccer and earning minutes under Gasperini, a coach known for demanding a great deal from his defensive lines.
