Leones edges past Manta 2-0 in Ecuador on goals from Griffa and Borja

Goals from Emiliano Griffa and Ronny Borja gave Leones the win on the road despite Manta's offensive dominance at the Jocay.

Leones edges past Manta 2-0 in Ecuador on goals from Griffa and Borja

Leones came away with a 2-0 road win over Manta at Estadio Jocay in a Serie A of Ecuador match that the home side controlled on the field but not on the scoreboard. Goals from Emiliano Griffa and Ronny Borja, plus a missed penalty from Juan Anangonó, defined a night in which Manta produced more offensive volume without being able to turn it into goals.

An early blow that Manta could never overturn

The match was just 16 minutes old when Leones struck first: Emiliano Griffa fired with his right foot from inside the box, off a headed assist from Segundo Portocarrero, to make it 0-1 with a shot into the top corner. Before that goal, Manta had already given a warning with a shot off the crossbar from Jostin Alman and a chance for Octavio Moscarelli, but Leones' sharpness in front of goal tipped the first half in its favor, which ended 0-1.

In the second half, Manta kept pushing through Glendys Mina and Joaquin Verges, but couldn't find the goal that would have leveled things. The match reached a turning point in the 68th minute, when Cristhian Solano was fouled by Mateo Ortiz inside the box. The referee didn't call it right away, but the VAR review in the 71st minute confirmed the penalty for Leones. Juan Anangonó, however, wasted the chance, his shot saved by Manta's goalkeeper in the 73rd minute. Despite that miss, Leones closed out the win in stoppage time, in the 90th minute, when Ronny Borja, who had just come on, unleashed a right-footed shot from outside the box that flew into the top corner off an assist from Solano, sealing the final 0-2.

The numbers behind the match

The stats reflect a Manta side that carried the initiative without reward: it dominated possession and generated more shots, but it was Leones that proved more clinical when it mattered most.

According to an in-house post-match xG estimate based on shot locations, Manta generated 2.172 expected goals against Leones' 1.202, a gap that confirms the home side had plenty of offensive arguments, even though it lacked the finishing touch its rival showed in the penalty areas.

A result that defied the preview

The projection published before the match gave Manta a 31% chance of winning, put a draw at 37%, and gave Leones a 32% chance of victory, with a total of 1.75 expected goals for the game. What happened at the Jocay strayed pretty far from that forecast: there was no draw, the home side didn't win, and the result ended up being a clear two-goal victory for Leones, an outcome the preview had rated less likely than the other two options.

What the result means in the standings

With this result, Leones stays in eighth place with 35 points from 25 matches played (9 wins, 8 draws and 8 losses), while Manta remains in last place, 16th, with just 17 points from 25 matches (4 wins, 5 draws and 16 losses). The 18-point gap between the two sides in the standings confirms two opposite realities as the season winds down: a Leones side still adding points bit by bit in the middle of the table, and a Manta side that can't pull away from the bottom despite flashes of good soccer, like the ones it showed tonight without being able to cash in on the scoreboard.
