Lepaul's 95th-Minute Penalty Gives Rennes a Wild 3-2 Win Over Le Mans
Rennes claim the Ligue 1 win with a stoppage-time penalty after dominating the match with a man advantage.

Roazhon Park witnessed a nail-biting finish: Esteban Lepaul converted a penalty in the 95th minute to make it a final 3-2 for Rennes over Le Mans, in a Ligue 1 match that looked all but settled before halftime but ended up being decided in the dying seconds. The drama didn't even stop there: in the stoppage time that followed Lepaul's own goal, the referee pointed to another penalty, this time for Le Mans, though the scoreboard didn't change again.
Rennes came out flying. Just 4 minutes in, Lepaul slotted home a low finish off an assist from Adrien Thomasson to make it 1-0, and everything pointed to a comfortable afternoon when Valentin Rongier doubled the lead with a strike from outside the box in the 25th minute. The 2-0 cushion didn't last long: four minutes later, Louis Mafouta popped up unmarked to pull one back from close range after a cross from Lucas Calodat.
The second half opened with another blow for the home side. In the 50th minute, VAR reviewed a handball by Przemyslaw Frankowski inside the area and awarded a penalty to Le Mans. Mafouta made no mistake from the spot in the 53rd minute to make it 2-2, blowing the match wide open again. Things got even tougher for the visitors when Djibril Sidibe, who had just come on, was sent off with a straight red card in the 67th minute, leaving Le Mans to play out the rest of the match a man down.
With the extra man, Rennes pushed hard throughout the closing stretch: Ludovic Blas hit the post and then the crossbar within the span of two minutes, and Lepaul also came close with a shot that grazed the bar. Le Mans, down to ten men, held on until the referee called another penalty, this time in favor of Rennes, for a handball by Noa Boisse inside the box. Lepaul stepped up and buried the winning 3-2 in the 95th minute, then picked up a yellow card for excessive celebration.
The numbers behind the onslaught
Rennes' dominance shows clearly in the stats. The home side racked up more than double the possession and shots of their opponents, though Le Mans made the most of their chances to stay in the fight until the very end.
| Stat | Rennes | Le Mans |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 64 | 36 |
| Shots | 22 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 5 |
| Big chances | 3 | 3 |
| Corners | 8 | 6 |
| Passes | 498 | 280 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 15 |
The xG generated in the match, calculated afterward based on shot locations, came out to 3.53 for Rennes against 2.79 for Le Mans, a gap that backs up the home side's greater attacking volume but also makes clear the visitors created real danger despite playing more than twenty minutes with a man down.
Pre-match projections had pointed to a heavily one-sided affair: 67% win probability for Rennes, 20% for a draw and just 13% for Le Mans, with expected goals of 2.3 for the home side and 0.95 for the visitors. The final result turned out to be far tighter than those numbers suggested: Le Mans managed to level the score twice and only gave way in stoppage time, in an ending no projection could have foreseen with this much drama.
What it means in the standings
With this result, Rennes hold onto fourth place with 4 points from two matches played, while Le Mans sit 13th with just 1 point after two games. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 3 points, a margin this match could have narrowed had Le Mans managed to hold on to the draw they had within reach right up to the closing seconds.
