Leverkusen Fails to Complete Comeback in Augsburg: Bittersweet Draw at WWK Arena After Schick's 88th-Minute Goal

Leverkusen Fails to Complete Comeback in Augsburg: Bittersweet Draw at WWK Arena After Schick's 88th-Minute Goal

Bayer 04 Leverkusen dominated for most of the match with more than 63 percent possession and thirty shots to Augsburg's eight, but left the WWK Arena with a 2-2 draw that feels underwhelming. Patrik Schick's goal in the 88th minute prevented a loss that, based on the match's numbers, would have been hard to explain for the visiting side.

Augsburg, with less than half the ball, found a way to strike twice in just five minutes at the start of the second half and even took the lead in the Bundesliga clash.

How the Scoring Unfolded

Leverkusen opened the scoring early, in the 17th minute, when Christian Kofane finished with his left foot from the center of the box after a through ball from Edmond Tapsoba. The visitors carried that lead into halftime, having already shown their territorial dominance in a first half without putting the game away.

The second half began and everything changed within minutes. In the 49th minute, Michael Gregoritsch equalized for Augsburg with a low shot just inside the left post, assisted by Hennes Behrens on another through ball. Less than five minutes later, Gregoritsch struck again, this time with a header into the top corner, to make it 2-1 after a corner delivery from Fabian Rieder. Two goals in five minutes flipped the match on its head.

Leverkusen responded with persistence. In the 59th minute, Ibrahim Maza thought he had scored the equalizer, but VAR disallowed the goal and the referee confirmed the call a minute later: the score stayed 2-1 in Augsburg's favor. The visitors kept pushing with attacking substitutions (Patrik Schick, Malik Tillman and Martin Terrier all came on) and shots that couldn't find the net. The equalizer finally arrived in the 88th minute: Schick, with his right foot, finished just inside the left post off an assist from Tillman to make it a final 2-2.

The Numbers Behind the Dominance

The stats show a massive gap in the volume of play generated by Leverkusen, which nonetheless didn't translate into more goals than its opponent.

The shots on target figure, five apiece despite the thirty to eight gap in total attempts, helps explain the result: Leverkusen fired away plenty but not always accurately. Our own xG estimate for the match backs up that reading: 1.97 for Leverkusen versus 0.82 for Augsburg, a wide gap in chances created that the final score didn't fully reflect.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Leverkusen a 50 percent chance of winning, with 23 percent for Augsburg and 27 percent for a draw, with expected goals of 1.69 for the visitors and 1.10 for the home side. The final result, a 2-2 draw, ended up tighter than that forecast anticipated, though the split points fell within the range of expected outcomes.

What It Means for the Table

With this draw, Augsburg holds onto third place in the standings with 7 points from 3 matches played (2 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses), while Leverkusen sits sixth with 4 points from 3 matches (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss). The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 3 points. A point that keeps the home side up near the top, and one that leaves Leverkusen with a bitter aftertaste after creating so much and coming away with so little.
