That's exactly what Liga de Quito did against Emelec, winning 2-0 in the 2026 Ecuabet League despite Janner's red card, and head coach Gustavo Álvarez didn't hold back in putting into words what he's been building since arriving at the club.

The Argentine coach held nothing back at the post-match press conference. He spoke about growth, about demanding standards, and about a process that, in his view, still has a long way to go. "We've taken an important step toward the goal we set from the start: building a team that keeps growing and becomes more and more competitive. I link the ideal with perfection. The point is never settling, and improvement has no ceiling," he explained.

What stood out most about the win was precisely how they pulled it off a man short. The match opened with clear control from Liga, to the point where they could have gone into halftime with an even bigger lead. But the red card forced them to rethink everything on the fly.

Álvarez went further, explaining how they had to adjust the game plan in real time. "The red card led us to change how we controlled the match. The team held the game together really well, and it was a good match. We keep growing," he added.

Confidence as fuel

For the coach, results like this aren't just three more points in the standings. Above all, they're a way of reinforcing the group's identity. "Wins strengthen us, build confidence, and help us grow. This group has to keep convincing itself, day by day, of what it's capable of doing and sustain that growth to be a real contender," he said.

His mind, though, is already on what's next. Liga de Quito will travel to face Aucas, and Álvarez will have to decide which faces stay in the lineup and which get rotated out, something he insists he doesn't take lightly. "We evaluate rotation day by day. We're already thinking about Aucas, and we'll assess how each player arrives. Everyone knows that minutes aren't given away here, each one earns them through work," he said.

To close, the coach also addressed the arrival of Marcelo Weigandt, who has already joined the squad's training sessions. "He's already trained with the group, and I spoke with him so he understands what we expect from his involvement. Today's strong performance also shows things we need to fix. The players are starting to believe, and we're headed in that direction," Álvarez concluded, making clear that beyond the result, what matters most to him is that the team stays convinced of the path it's on.
