Liga de Quito hosts Mirassol in Libertadores round of 16 with the numbers on its side
The Ecuadorian club needs a draw or a win at home to advance, after coming away with a 1-1 draw in Brazil.
A road draw usually reads as a good result, and that's exactly what Liga de Quito takes into the second leg of this round of 16 matchup. The 1-1 draw secured in Brazil on August 13 leaves the Ecuadorian side with home field advantage and, more importantly, with the numbers in its favor: a draw, or a win, sends them through. Now it's time to confirm it at Casa Blanca.
The tie is played this Thursday, August 20 at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, for the second leg of the round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Libertadores. Kickoff times: 7:00 PM in Argentina and Uruguay, 6:00 PM in Chile, and 5:00 PM in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Broadcast coverage for all of South America falls to Disney+ Premium Plan.
Why does this match matter so much? Because Liga de Quito already knows what it's like to reach the continent's final eight: it did so in the 2025 edition and is looking to repeat that feat on its own turf, where it tends to be a tough out. Mirassol, on the other hand, arrives forced to take risks. The Brazilian club needs a win to keep its hopes alive, and if the aggregate score stays level, everything would be decided from the penalty spot.
How both teams arrive
On the field, the vibes couldn't be more different. Liga de Quito comes off a road win in the capital city Superclasico against Aucas in the Liga Ecuabet, a result that leaves the squad with confidence heading into this continental clash. Mirassol, meanwhile, is carrying a tough blow: it was routed by Flamengo in the Brasileirao, something that could weigh on morale before the trip to Quito.
At home, Liga de Quito sets up with a clear game plan. Gonzalo Valle between the posts, a back line with Ricardo Ade, Luis Segovia and Gian Allala, and a mobile midfield featuring Jesus Pretell, Alejandro Tobar and Fernando Cornejo. Up top, the forward pairing of Michael Estrada and Deyverson, two names capable of settling a tight match with a single set piece or a shot from distance.
Mirassol counters with Joao Victor and Oliveira as defensive anchors, Carlos Eduardo and Denilson Alves running the midfield, and Edson Carioca alongside Bruno Santos forming the attacking partnership tasked with finding the goal that would change the course of the series.
Quito's altitude, the tight result from the first leg, and Mirassol's need to go toe to toe give this matchup every ingredient to stay undecided until the very end. An early goal for the home side could settle things; one for the visitors would force a rethink of every minute left on the clock.
